Dear Sir
I am writing in response to your request for additional information. In
block #3 of the Accident Report form, I put "trying to do the job alone" as the cause of my accident. You said in your letter that I should explain more fully. I trust the following details will be sufficient.
I am an Air Conditioning Technician by trade. On the day of the accident, I was working alone on the roof of a new six story building. When I completed my work, I realized that I had about 500 lbs. of tools on the roof, which needed to be put away in my truck. Rather than carry the tools down by hand, l decided to lower them in a barrel by using a pulley which was conveniently attached to the side of the building and also to the roof of this six story building.
Securing the rope at ground level, I went up to the roof, swung the wooden barrel out and loaded the tools into it. Then I went back to the ground and untied the rope, holding it secure to ensure a slow decent of the 500 lbs. of tools.
You will note in block #2 of the Accident Report form that I weigh 185. lbs. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a rather rapid rate up the side of the building. Somewhere in the vicinity of the third floor I met the barrel coming down;this explains my fractured skull and broken collarbone. Slowed only slightly, I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my left hand were buried two knuckles deep into the pulley.
Fortunately, by this time I had regained my presence of mind and in spite of my pain, I was able to hold tightly to the rope to avoid a free fall of six stories. At approximately the same time, the barrel of tools hit the ground and the bottom fell out of the barrel. With the tools gone, the barrel now weighed only about 50 lbs. I refer you once again to my weight in block #2. As you might imagine, I began a rapid descent down the side of the building. Again, at about the third floor, I met the barrel coming up. This accounts for the two fractured ankles and the lacerations of my legs and lower body.
This second encounter with the barrel slowed me enough to lessen my injuries when I fell on my vacuum pump, and fortunately only three vertebrae were cracked.
I'm sorry to report, however, that as I lay there twisted amongst my tools, in severe pain, unable to move out of the way, and having let go of the rope, I watched in horror as the empty barrel made the return trip from six stories above me. This is when the barrel broke both of my legs.
I hope that I have furnished the information you require and you will be able to read this as I am writing you from my bed in the hospital where I am still in traction. The next time, I am sure that I will not try to do it alone.
