September Wotsat has a review of the Fortecstar Lifetime Diamond.
No RGB Output but I think Fortec will be rectifying this. If you decide on it, make sure it has this sorted.

Is the 5100 diamond the same ?
Are there any other boxes like this that have both satellite and DTT ?

The 5100 Diamond has 2 CI slots, otherwise the same - no RGB, just CVBS and audio on the scart.

I guess these are like 1st generation dual function boxes. Hopefully someone will come up with one having a better spec. I did see somwhere that Samsung were demonstrating one at a show last year, but there is nothing on their website.

I just got this reply from Fortec regarding the lack of RGB:

Allen,

Thanks for your email. I am expecting in a shipment of 500 of each LT and
5100 diamonds all have RGB connected. It was an oversight on the original
batch of 100 units sent over for test market.

Regards,

Apparently a software update will be available in the near future which will enable RGB in existing receivers.

Still no seperate audio though. I think I'll wait for a model with a slightly better spec. Someone must produce one soon. Until then I've just brought a cheap DTT box to keep me going. I might even decide this is enough.

Are there any comparisons of what FTA channels are available on Sky's satellite against what is available on Freeview ? I'm not sure if I'd gain much by also getting FTA on satellite. Any thoughts ?

Yes there are a lot of extra channels on Astra 28.2 FTA and any cheap digital receiver will pick them up, there is probably more of interest elsewhere though.

So it would probably be better to get a cheap FTA satellite receiver instead of a combined one. Just means more boxes more scart leads and switching between them. Also the Fortec has CI slots which might come in handy if I got more interested in what was available.

The main reason for the satellite FTA would be for OBE (which my wife wants). Can this be received on any other satellite other than 28.2 ?

Also can you get childrens channels such as Nick Jnr, or TCN ?

Thanks,

Allen

Not sure what you mean by "separate audio". The Diamond has the usual RCA audio o/p as well as scart audio.

Oops I missed that. So I'd be able to plug it into my hifi system. It's getting better all the time.

Now if I wanted to use it for picking up from several satellites would I need a steerable dish, or several seperate dishes, or get up a ladder and manually move the dish everytime I change satellite (I'm sure you can tell I'm new to this).

I just looked at the review in WotSat and the picture of the box shows that it is DiSEqC1.3 capable, so it can control a dish. The website doesn't even mention this. However, the review does state that it doesn't have an MHEG-5 engine, so no interactive services. That is now my only stumbling block. If they can get that, I'm buying one !

Please post your feelings about this receiver. I was actually looking at getting the 5100 Diamond instead of the 5100 Ultra. Are you getting this complete kit with the dish as well ?

Hi Martin,

Has the 5100 Diamond arrived yet, and what are your impressions of it if it has ?

I just got an email from Dave at SatelliteSuperstore who said it could open channels on Astra1 and Hostbird without a card. Is this true ?

Hi Allen
It is indeed possible to do that.
What you will need is a patch called 'Al7Bar' from one of the Yahoo groups specialising in the Fortec receivers, e.g :-

Hi Llew,

Very interesting. Each day I seem to learn something new about this Fortec receiver, and so far it's all been good news. Are there any drawbacks that you know of this receiver ?

Thanks,

Allen

Not many really. The ZIF tuner could be a little more sensitive. My box, the 5100+Ultra is the CI version without Freeview but otherwise it uses the same software - the blind scan facility is what I bought it for, but the ability to download patch files for various encryption systems makes it a very versatile receiver.
