Hi all,
I want to make a mark on the pole for SOUTH to tighten the Dish etc. But when I bring the Compass near the dish the needle won't stay on where it suppose to be. It works fine when I take it away about 2 feet from the dish

How you peple use the compass to find the South (True south I should say).

Thanks

Hi Me again

I tried all day today tried invain to install the dish but I am getting so annoyed.

I know my Lat-Long and also have got some figure to work with but I DO NOT GET IT in my thick head. If anybody please tell me in plain English what to do the figure below. Inshort which degree should i fix the Motor and which degree the Dish. I have got satellite finder but I do not get any beeps or no signal strenth varitions even I moved it around ALOT.

My Latitude and Longitude are as below from google Maps
******************************************
Latitude = 53.013, Longitude = -2.183
Lat = 53 degrees, 0.8 minutes North
Long = 2 degrees, 11.0 minutes West

*******************************************
Satellite orbit (deg E)
13 (Hotbird- as It is the nearest on East I guess)
*************************************
Based on above figures the calculations for me are as below
**************************************
Dish Azimuth (E degree relative to true North)
161.24
*******************************************
Dish Azimuth (deg E relative to megnative Noth)
165.92
*******************************************
Dish elavation (deg)
27.84
******************************************
Salnt range (km)
38809.77
*****************************************
Polarisation tilt (deg)
-11.16
*****************************************
Polar mount main axis angle(deg)
53.68
****************************************
Polar mount dish offset tilt (deg)
6.9
****************************************

Also what equipments I need (reasonable priced If I have to buy one).

Thanks

The dish is metal, and the needle is reacting to a big lump of metal nearby! :D

Stand a couple of feet away, and take a bearing onto an object on the skyline. Then stand by the lnb arm , look along it, and align onto that same point. You will be fairly close with a bit of practise. Dont forget to allow for magnetic variation! (Magnetic south is about 5 degrees away from due south....)

Either that, or tape it to a long stick and attach it to the dish boom, but by far the best (and easiest) way is to find Thor 1W and use it as your due South reference as it is only one degree away from your true South..

What do they say about steel object and magnets?
I know that the sun is due south just before noon (GMT)at my location.
As Analoguesat states, look along the lnb arm.
I took a look along the arm on my dish towards the sun, saw a knot hole in the fence that was in line and painted a white ring round it.
Problem solved, close enough as a starting point when I change dishes.

Does the Metronic motor ask for elevation or latitude as a setting?

Yes by going to USALS menu in silvercrest SL65.
It asks for Lat-long and sat position.
bot elevaation though.

also if anyone searches this forum looking for odd magnetic effects, my old balcony was mostly metal and a compass would not really work on it :D

No, not the settings in the receiver software, the actual setting scale on the side of the motor, as this needs to be set eaxactly for your location.

Well at last something positive today even though I was all soaked in rain and snow :)

I tried everthing since Sunday and thought there might be some thing wrong with the LNB. so I cheacked it with the Multimeter for connectivety (I do not if thats how you check LNB for faults :)) anyway I did not get any responce on the multimeter. So I went to my local MAPLIN store and checked there new LNB with my multimeter and it talked to me.
well I bought that LNB for `£15.00 and fixed it. and it worked as the sat meter finder started to beep.
Now I have another problem, I read the motor manual all the way to the end (even I had to sleep for 2 hour in between) but I could not find the solution for; What if the sat finder beeps does it means you have the right Satellite or it is just ANY satellite.
Also I do not have/find any option in my SilverCrest SL65 to reset the motor so it comes back to 0.

at the moment the I put it on hotbird 13E and did Autoscan and have found TWO carriers. the channel numbers are between 700-750 some of them and encrypted and the rest are not clear videos.

What should be my next step??

thanks

Right, the sat meter will only tell you that you have found a satellite, not which one.

Forget Hotbird, manually drve the motor to 1 degree East on the motor body and then concentrate on finding Thor 1 degree W, that will give you the highest point in the arc. You will need to adjust the elevation of the dish to peak it and of course move the whole motor assembly on the pole. I am assuming that you have correctly set the latitude/elevation on the motor body.

Thanks rolfw
what do you mean by HIGHEST POINT in arc? do I have to tilt back the dish. at the moment I gets beeps on (Motor elevation 53 and dish elevatio 12)..
Another thing. I do not have an entry for THOR1W in my reciever. I added it now.
I am at work now so when I want to set it later on, do I have go to DISCEQC menu select THOR1 and assing POSITION to THOR and move the dish to 1 deg W?

what you do after you find the sat? do autoscan?

clarke belt is the track where all sats your after can be found,
if you locate thor 1w from your pos (lat, long) then this is the top of the arc and there for makes it easier to track the rest

sorry another stupid question!
do I have to put the motor on 1W before looking for THOR?
Will the channals will appear itself OR I have to autoscan it?
Also What frequency shall i enter for thor in the satellite menu.
thanks
