Hi,

sorry if tis is the wrong forum.
i have recently purchased a house that has a sky minidish fitted to it. i would like to use this dish to use satellite channels other then sky, but i have no idea how to do this. i presume i have to move the dish to point to another dish first.

1) where should i point the dish? is there a channel list at the moment for each satellite?
2) what hardware do i need to decode the data?
3) i presume i need a card for whatever equipment i need to decode it, what should i get?

sorry if these questions have been asked before.

1)You can see a full list of satellite and the channels here...

http://www.lyngsat.com/

Some are FTA (free to air) you don't need a card etc - some are coded. If they are this is listed beside each channel.

The site will tell you what size dish you will need depending on your location. So check the channels you want, the size of dish plus if they are encoded.

2) A large selection of recievers exists and each has it's own advantages/disadvantages. Have a look at the magazine 'What Satellite' and you'll get a better understanding. Each receiver will have it's own fans, check the different forums on this site.

3) You don't need a card for the FTA channels, you can get hundreds of them if you pick the right satellite position. If you want to decode other channels, again this can be done with Card, CAM (Conditional Access Module) combinations or a box that doesn't need these but is a bit complicated and needs computer experience.

Remember that unless you use an official card the reliability of the channels you decode is not guaranteed and they may not remain receivable.

Sky is not available without and official card and receiver.

Unfortuately mate D+ has recently suffered the same fate
but should be back end of Nov if rumours are to be believed.
there are still things to be had on hotbird (13E) both FTA
and otherwise. But if you are keen on getting D+ then
you have plenty of time to set up.

Watch this space. ;)

Hi
Astra 19E and Hotbird 13E are the most popular satellites as you can set up a dish with two LNB's to receive them.
Some receivers e.g. Fortec can work without CAMs and cards - you just upload a patch to the receiver via your PC to emulate various encryption systems.

Are Hungary channels available to view in UK?
I am trying to find out whether channels like M1,M2,DunaTV,RTL KLUB,TV2 are available in digital stereo picture and sound via uk.

I am a Sky Digital plus customer currently not set up[without it for last 13 months due to accommodation difficulties] trying to find a system that carries hungary channels for my mates girlfriend.

I use to be able to get czech channels on Sky but no other channels via other channels so I think if it is possible to view in uk I will need to know systems that receive astra in uk?

Also how much would astra be and are monthly subscriptions much dearer than sky?

Thanks for any help and cause this is urgent request I have stuck it in forum with most visitors until i familarise myself with these forums.

No, it's made for the powerful Astra/Eurobird 28E satellites only.
Depending on where you are, you really need a 70cm dish for satellites such as Astra 19 or HB. (60cm. is the minimum if you are in southern UK). The larger the better if you want to receive other sats, especially if you decide to go motorised.

Nil Desperandum old son.

Skystar 2s are very cheap and the software's all free. :)

Dish & bits for less than a ton.

For £150 you could be quite well set up on the scale of things.
This is a very interesting and absorbing hobby depending how
much time effort and brain power you are willing to give up.

Unfortunately it costs a little to set up. But it IS well worth it. :-cheers

Yes, the cable will be OK you will not need to put any new cable in. It will be Shielded Coax.

Get yourself an 80 or even a 1m if you can talk the missus round.
I think the orbital 1m is only £49.
Get an LNB (MTI blue £15)
A Skystar2 PCI sat card (£59).

Then get on here and we'll set it up for you.
You can't say fairer than that..
:) :) :)

You may still be able to pick up a 90cm dish at some Lidl stores for £13.99. they were also doing a wall plate for £3.99. Search your local store or if anyone here know of a store with any left I'm sure they will let you know.

The bigger the dish the more channels you will receive - you can't have too many!!!
