Hi,
I have recently set up a dreambox 600 for a friend, however, I haven't finished setting up a certain thing ;) and still need to ftp files to the dreambox. I have also set up port forwarding for him. My question is, can I ftp files to my friends dreambox remotely? I can connect by inserting the dns address & completing the logon screen. This would save me many journeys as I'm still in the experimental stage :D
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Regards,
Ollie

What sort of file extensions are you thinking of?
The only thing that I can think of at the moment is to use Tuxmail on both boxes and send him a short text message.
Another idea is if you have a website, then you can put files in your website and he can then download it from the links web browser. The problem is opening it as only *.txt files would show correctly.
Perhaps more ideas will be posted here.

Hi HB,
Thanks for your reply, I was wanting to update/edit files as you would in DCC. The edit file in particular is a cam config file. I can see var ect but not the config in var/ect. I'm thinking now it may not be possible, but have read somewhere of someone configuring another persons dreambox remotely.
I can explain to my friend how to do everything, but it would be alot quicker/easier if I did it.

Ollie

I don't use DCC.
Have you tried Tux commander?
Can be installed from the Blue Button > Addons. Look for Tux com (or something?)
There is a nice thread in the Idiot's guide.
This is the best way to edit text files without using a PC.
It helps if there is a Dreambox Keyboard or a USB Keyboard for models with a USB interface.

yes it can be done, I do this regular.

Make sure your friends router has ftp port 21 open for you and forward to his local dreambox ip. then goto your web browser and put this in:

_http://his_ip_adress_or_dns:21

You will then get access to his dreambox username and password, then once this has been enteres you will see all the relevant files.

I normally configure a file from my side using DCC...example cccam.cfg then, simply drag the file into his window.. ( am i making this clear?) lol

its very, very simple.....just get him to reboot box

To FTP files remotely:

1. configure the router with port forwarding. Opening port 21 is not a good idea, so if his router supports public and private ports, open a different port e.g. 10001 as the public port and forward it to port 21, using the Dreambox IP address.
2. Configure a new connection in an FTP program using port 10001, using your friends WAN IP address.

To get his WAN IP address: either

1. use a dyndns account
2. use a fixed IP address if he has one
3. get him to read it from _http://whatismyipaddress.com/ each time you want to FTP in.

If port 21 is open and forwarded to his Dreambox, you can test it from any browser using the following (replace 81.81.81.81 with his WAN IP address:

Code:
ftp://81.81.81.81

Thanks for your replies guys, sorry I've been so long in getting back.
I am having a hard time of it lately, I configured my friends router+firewall to allow access through a port, I also temporarily used the DMZ host, I connected with DCC perfectly, but only because of the DMZ host being on. I have since disabled this for security reasons and now I cannot connect, not even using the ip with :port number in my browser.
I have studied the port forward website and have gone over the settings time and time again, but neither my friends or mine router forwards on the chosen port. I have however used a website called ping my port and this states both ports are open???

Really confused now, 12 days of trying and nothing so far:confused

Thanks again for your replies, don't know if anyone has any further ideas? They would be gladly appreciated.

Regards,
Ollie

It might be easier for you to try to connect to one of your Dreamboxes (I see from your profile that you have a 7020S and 500S) and when you have mastered the method, you can apply it then to your friend's box.
This is what I would have started with anyway.
Good Luck. :)

Hi HB,
Yes, agreed, I have tried to connect with my 500 by inserting the external & DNS addresse in browser window, both connect to my router, any attempt I have had at adding a port to direct at the dream have failed.
If I master this I want to set up another kind of connection... but sad to say I'm on the verge of giving up, think I have tried every which way lol.

Best wishes,
Ollie

Perhaps disabling any antivirus or internet security applications would help.

Have you made sure that your m8's db as a fixed ip ?

So many people leave dhcp ticked in setup page.

Let us know what make is the router is.

I use software called flashfxp and can login to "friends" db's all over europe without problem.

What is his router?

A clue here?:

I also temporarily used the DMZ host, I connected with DCC perfectly, but only because of the DMZ host being on. I have since disabled this for security reasons and now I cannot connect

From my limited network experience, putting the Dreambox into a DMZ suggests security settings on the router are blocking you (when you remove it from the DMZ).

Thanks again for you replies,
The router in question is a 'Netgear DG834GT' I have setup a dns domain name which is working well. I can connect with dcc by putting the domain name in the window under the dreambox symbol (whilst dmz is activated) I cannot however log in from browser window using the ip or domain with the port number after.
I have now reactivated the dmz featiure to allow me back in, but cannot find a setting like - inbound port. outbound port like my router has. I can only find an option to specify one port.
Is there a way to change ports in dcc? or is it a matter of putting the port in with the dreamboxes ip.
Will play around with a few other ftp applications as suggested.

Thanks,
Ollie

ps. I have configured the security/firewall settings also.

I use the netgear router and it is very simple.
Once you open the port you must then allow it in the services menu.
I would also recomend that you use cuteftp.
There is another option if you have problems.
Code:
crossloop.com
This is a simple tool that gives you access to your freinds pc desktop, from there you can just use his DCC.
