Tested using a VGA lead from laptop to PC but picture was slightly washed out on a 32" LCD TV. Will test later with an HDMI lead from desktop, but I doubt that will be any different.

Is there a better method. I have 1000 kbps upload (speed confirmed).

I know about a using a Slingcatcher but I don't want to get another expensive box.

You need to work out where you are losing the colour. Does the colour look good on the laptop? If not it is the slingbox or the leads or box feeding it that is at fault. If the colour looks good on the laptop it is something between the laptop and TV. By the way what resolution are you using because a low resolution will also give the feel of being washed out and lack of detail especially on a TV of that size.

hello
up load is not the color issue.
the down load will not correct the color as well.
hdmi will brobably work better.
i saw on here in italy and she had 3.5 meg down load but the sling box was working at 1.8 to 2.0 meg down load and using hdmi it was working like a champ
