Not that I'm particularly bothered, but apparently it's something recommended by her provider to collate and store images from the phone (Nokia Lumix thingy) onto the PC.

I've had a look and to be honest the application appears to be bloody hungry on resources, but try as I might I can't get images off the phone any other way.

Anyone have an alternative (apart from changing her phone/provider )?

Thanks in advance

Total Commander can handle some weird shit.
Code:
Old Nokias: http://totalcmd.net/plugring/nokiafs.html
Symbian: http://totalcmd.net/plugring/SYMBFS.html
But if it's running Windows Mobile maybe you can access them directly?

There's even TC for Windows Mobile, maybe there's a way to sync?

Cable connection does not work ? > How to Connect Lumia 820 to PC

Don't know about recent models, but Nokia has always been good at using simple usb connection for file transfers, am doing transfers that way to and from my Nokia (music, pictures, video, maps), slow but 100% reliable. Bluetooth is another possibility, or even copying stuff to the SD card and reading it off the pc using a micro-to-standard adapter.

And yes, do make regular backups!

If it's any consolation the Samsung software (Kies) is also ****** awful, resource hog and borderline unusable.

My works phone is a Galaxy A3 and that connects straight to the PC with a cable and images are within a DCIM folder, just like the Fuji camera. Previously the HTC1 phone did exactly the same.
I'm just a bit stumped there is no similar process with the Lumia 610.

A lot of newer phones use MTP for transferring files from phone to PC via usb. This allows the phone and the PC to be able to access the storage device at the same time, something that want possible when PC mounted the phone's storage device as a physical removable drive (the phone couldn't access it and lots of applications crashed).

On android, depending on kernal I think you dial *#0808# and can choose MTP if you can't find it in the storage settings

I'm not sure on Windows Phone tho

"This tool allows you to unlock the bootloader of selected Lumia Windows Phone models. After unlocking the bootloader, you can enable Root Access on the phone or create and flash Custom ROM's. I created a short introduction video to show the features of the tool.
Root Access allows you to load your own homebrew software onto the phone with high privileges. Apps can escape from their sandboxes. The tool can also create backup-images of the phone and access the file-system in Mass Storage mode."
