Hello,

I am trying to decide where to mount my dish.
My geographical position is
Latitude 52 ° 9' N
Longitude 2 ° 16'

and the front of my house is south facing. SMWLink calculates the angle of elevation should be 29.4°

Can I mount the dish on a pole at the back of the house?
Will it "clear" the roof or will the roof block any signal?
The roof is a typical terraced roof.

I have a attached a diagram (sorry it's so poor).

If I have to mount it on the front of the house,
how far away from the wall will I have to mount it?
(motorised, 90cm)

Suggestions, comments?

Thanks :)

LOL, your drawing is better than mine :)

If the intended height of the dish is as indicated (relative to the apex of the roof) then you should get most sats near the top of the arc at least. Also, the further away from the apex of the roof (i.e. north in your case) the better.

If mounting at the front of the house and the house is facing pretty much directly south (and you're using a typical diseqc motor), then an 12" standoff should do you. If you're not sure, drive the motor E/W 50 degrees and offer it up before drilling.

Make sure you get that pole dead vertical!

Thanks for the replies. Mounting the pole further north is feasible.

Does the dish (will be mounted on a Motek HH) not just move east to west (horizontal plane)? Do they also move vertically? Or does it move on a parabola (or is that elipse)?

Is the 29.4 degrees elevation a guide or a rule (for my location)?

Thanks again :)

Not sure about your elevation without looking it up, but it's probably not far off for your due south satellite.

The dish unfortunately does not just move 'side to side' but tracks an arc in the sky with the highest point at due south, and lowering in the sky to the east and west of that.

The geometry to perform that awkward movement is built into the motor itself, but satellites at say 65 degrees east and west would be close to the horizon.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... :(

Feck! So mounting the dish at the rear of the house is a no-no as it won't have clear line of site at 65 degrees E or W.

Hmmm, but as my front garden faces another row of terraced houses (about 30m), if I mount on a front wall, will it be OK?

Quick question anout dishes: if the roof height mount worked, would a mesh dish be a better option (in terms of wind resistance)?

How do transparent dishes compare to solid and mesh?

Thanks for the reply.

Many setups are a compromise, and if you could get 28.2E to 30W you would still have a lot of fun. You may find you can even get around to 42E.

The 'main' sats are 28.2E, 19.2E 16E 13E 5E 1W 5W 30W and a few bits and pieces in between for feeds etc.

Plug the 30M and elevation at the E/W extremes (at your location) etc. into the angle finder you found to work out how high you'd have to mount at the front of the house.

Mesh dishes can give you some small advantage high up, both in terms of wind resistance and weight. That's something that can give a 'plastic' dish an edge up high as well (plus it's not so obvious). Most well-made dishes perform about the same at 90cm IMHO.

Buy a good LNB (like the Invacom 0.3db) and some decent coax and you'll do OK.

Is there any differences in lnb's? Analog or digital? I hope to use my Dreambox to get a football feed but will I be able to get a feed that uses ART?

Cable: is CHT100 a good one?

All new LNB's will be digital capable if they are labelled 'universal'.

Check out my LNB recommendation and compare specs and prices. You can get the top of the range Invacom for around £25 if you shop around.

Any satellite cable which comes up to these sort of standards is OK. Comapre carefully. This is where I got mine...

I don't understand what you mean when you say 'a football feed that uses ART'.

:confused

If you can explain more, then I'll be able to give you a better answer. Do you have an ART card?

Don't be afraid to ask anything. We'll sort you out. :D

Thanks for your reply & info.

When I say football feed I meant any channel that is showing football; is football that needs an ART card from one satellite/ channel only?. I don't have an ART card but I know where to get the info (if that makes sense? not sure what you can & can't say on the forum).

I've got a Gold universal lnb (0.3db). Am looking for the best price on a clear 85cm dish (best is £82 delivered so far). I'll have a look at TLC and compare to cpc.co.uk

Sorry for all the dumb ass newbie questions!

Hello,
Thanks for the reply- I have a Motek HH motor. Just looking for cable+ connectors, a dish & mounting. Screwfix are cheaper for PH100 than TLC or cpc

Now, where to get a cheap transparent dish....

Not sure what your question is about football feeds and ART.

There is plenty of Prem. footy about at the moment without the need to subscribe to anything (if you so chose).

If that changes, then an ART subscription for the four ART sports channels on Hotbird 13E will show nearly every Prem. game for about £80 for 6 months.

Can't advise on a clear dish, as I don't have any experience and have never shopped for one I'm afraid.

Sounds like you're well on the way.

When you're up and running, there are some good posts here about connecting your DM500 up to your PC (not just for internet access) so that you can record/stream straight to disk.

:)

Not wanting to pick holes, just trying to save you some cash - TLC sell PF100 100m for £22.33 incl free local del and VAT, compared to Screwfix at £27-94 including £5.95 handling and VAT.

TLC don't appear to sell PH100, and Screwfix don't list it's spec, so I can't comment.

Here's Rolfw's plastic dish... http://www.satellites.co.uk/php-bin/forum/showpost.php?p=117579&postcount=1

I'm not local to TLC and if I order £45 delivery is free from Screwfix.
