I have just put up an 80cm dish and want to align it to Hotbird.
Which is the best channel to attempt to tune to for the most effective overall result?

Don't think it makes too much difference on Hotbird Meldrew, I'm assuming that you are in UK or western Europe. Look here http://www.lyngsat.com/hotbird.shtml and pick a free to air channel.

TVM. I'm starting off with a single satellite to try to get the hang of things. I'm in NW UK. Fortunately I have a flat garage roof so I take the TV and receiver outside and sit up there with a cup of tea. Hope the weekend weather is OK.....

P S I am getting a Technomate 5500CI and Matrix Cam as soon as my credit card clocks over (tomorrow). Hope this is a good decision for starters.

Technomate are a nice receiver, so it's certainly not a bad choice. :) If you know anyone with an old analogue receiver it will be easier to find and fine tune the satellite, butit's OK with a digital receiver, just takes a tad longer.

More useful info! My Pace MSS 200 is ready and waiting.
What DID we do without the knowledge available through
internet discussion groups....

You should be up and running pretty shortly then Meldrew. :) Good tip on fine tuning the dish with an analogue receiver is to cover the LNB with a damp tea towel, this will reduce the input signal and means that you will be able to see from the tangible change in picture quality when moving Azimuth, Elevation or Skew. So set the Azimuth and Elevation first, then when you have the best that you can get (Least Sparklies), tweak the LNB Skew (Rotation).

Hi Rolf, you sound like you may be able to help?

This is so infuriating, basically the only open sky to the south is across the garden, burn and 80m to the back of a wood, so with in-line boosters I get sky on one dish no problem and also astra 1 on a second, brand new 80cm dish, also no problem. Try as I might I cannot get a sniff of hotbird and I can't understand why. Sky and astra1 work fine with only a single booster in line in each of the cables. Would I need more boosters to get hotbird? Am using a wee satellite finder with needle and tone and am on a new silvercrest receiver for astra1 / hotbird. Hope you can help........Markyd23
