Do I have a legal right to TV reception?
Hello every one, I’ve just got home to find my neighbour as blocked my sat dish and aerial reception, by fitting 2 very tall chimney pots. Last night my TV etc was working fine, now I get a few channels. I have spoken to the planning office to see if they needed planning permission and they said no. Me and my neighbours have never got on, its along storey, there’s no point talking to them, as normal they will just laugh in my face. please if anyone can offer some friendly advice. I’m looking for the legal position. Do I have a legal right to TV reception?
Thanks again.

I suspect that the law (and I am certainly no expert or professional in these matters), if you were to involve it, would take the pragmatic position and say that there are probably plenty of positions on your house where reception in entirely possible and so wouldn't back your position. And it would cost a fair bit to get that result.

So, I think you'll have to bite the bullet and pay to have your dish and aerial relocated. A nuisance to be sure but the cheapest route. And that's surely what matters.

Hi DEBS and a warm welcome to the SatsUk forum.

I'm afraid this happens all the time, either with buildings going up or neighbors tree's / hedges blocking satellite reception etc.
Is there any where else the satellite dish can be positioned on your property?

Can't add much to what has been said already but I'm surprised the council said they don't need permission if they've changed the appearance of the visible roofline. Certainly in this part of the world you can't do anything without planning permission that impacts that.

hello,
you have a leagal right to tv recpetion.
now post a picture of what you are talking about.
there is not much can block digital terrestial. i am shooting through a 8 story highrise and in italy i pick up everything in the rain.
unless this man has put up the enpire state building over night.
you may have to place a small amp on the terrestial line or change the areal.
now satellite is s different stroy.
if you can take poome pictures and post it from the satellite's point of view to the chimeny pots what ever this is i can get a better idea.

Hi Thanks Satelliteman PaulR Aceb and Ralphmangno thanks for the reply. The dish was positioned on the chimneystack, as my neighbours would lasso the dish with a rope and pull it. And with cctv footage the police wouldn’t act, if anyone could possibly tell me do I have a legal right to TV reception. Ralphmango I don’t have a modern camera I’m nearly 56 yo but would if I could.
Many Thanks again

In answer to your question, I believe... in English law there is no legal right to TV reception. This article maybe worth a read, should give you some idea.

I believe satelliteman is correct and there is no legal right to tv reception in the UK.

Im no expert in these matters, and I stand to be corrected

Is the chimney stack a shared one with your neighbour? If so did you have permission to mount your dish and aerial on it?

1.2Mtr Polar MTG yes it has been on the arc for 35 years and is now fixed on 13 East using two pairs of rusty molegrips. Unlike me they never groan but always perform.

We really do need a photo of the chimney and the offending pots, without that it is difficult to advise, as stated earlier, chimney pots should not prevent terrestrial digital reception, they would of course affect satellite reception if they were directly in the way.

The other possibility is that whilst on the roof installing the pots, they messed with the dish and aerial, which may be actionable by police.

the positions in relation to the Clarke belt would also help, a pot to the west should not affect reception of freesat for example

hello,
here is what we need to know.
the chimeny is it on your house or someone else's house?
if the dish and terrestial areial on your chimeny?
do you share a common chimeny?
i do not know what the chimney pot is or what it looks like or its function does.
i would say if you have 1 common line and both satellite and terrestial flow down one line it has been cut and that is causing the problem.

hello,
ok now i know what a chimney pot is.
was there a pot there before and they replaced it?
was your terrestel and satellite dish both monted on this chimney where the pot was installed?
they would have to move both out of the way.
you should have a teck come out and see what the problem is.
the chances both have gone out because of a ceramic smoke stack is almost impossible.
the chances someone tripped on a wire and disconnected somethibg is possible.
do you share a common roof ?
if you have a friend that has a camera and post some pictures it would help.

Hello everyone. I would like to Thank you all so much for your replies, you have been very helpful. I have retuned my TV’s, from the aerial I now can get about 9 channels. From the sat dish nothing.
There was no chimney pots there for the last ten years.
The dish and the aerial was on the same stack. The sat dish bracket for the stack, the sat man fitter had made specially, as with the standard brackets he could not get the correct angle for the dish.
The aerial and dish haven’t been moved. Both wires seem look ok like I said, I can get a few more channels.
We share a chimney stack.
I have a friend coming on Friday with a camera.
Thanks again to all.

We appreciate you might not be able to get very close to the dishes, but if you can use whatever zoom facilities the camera has to show the dishes as clearly as possible it will help us diagnose your problems.

The dish problem may be as simple as its been knocked, although unless its grossly out of kilter, or something has rusted through and fallen off it may be difficult to tell from a photo.

If you wish to ask one of our installer members to help you put a request into the Installer Wanted section, stating your town, and noting the specific problem that roof installation / repair is required.

Nine channels is a very small number - it should be at least twenty od for Freeview Lite and fifty odd for full Freeview.

BTW, I'm assuming that you're NOT in an area which still has analogue transmissions. Can you confirm?
