Am i the only person to install a skystar 2 pci card and have problems getting a picture.

My Set up

I have a 90cm motorised dish with with a Topfield TF5000CI receiver. I have a 2.4Ghz computer with a 160Gb and 80Gb hard drives. I have a pc-tv card that works fine.

I have just bort a skystar2 pci card installed it and connected it to my dvb receiver via a coax cable which has suitable connectors for the sat. receiver LNB out and satpc-tv card.

When Iselect the Skystar program and click on setup4pc
The status shows as red not green. when I click on status the signal quality shows "signal out of lock". There is no figure for SNR it is infact greyed out.

The very first time I clicked on setup4pc the status was green and I was getting a signal figure of 45 and SNR read 2.5 . To my limited knowledge this is poor reception. There was no picture on my screen at all.

I need some serious help, if I had known skystar was not user friendly it would never have been bought. If any one can help I would appreciate it. Hopefully skystar will get round to providing a useful instruction sheet.

Have moved this to the correct section, have a look through this section, there is a lot of information with regard to setting up the SS2 and also the software you require, setup4pc is not particularly useful, try Mytheatre or ProgDVB.

Connect your dish directly to your Skystar for now, and install either MyTheatre V2.76 full, or the latest version of ProgDVB free from www.sat.joy.ro/download.html or www.progdvb.com respectively.

Concentrate on FTA channels until you have it working, which I'm sure you'll manage if you read some similar threads in this section.

Stick sounds right here. Using the LNB out from your other box does not give you control of the LNB ( usually you have to turn the satellite receiver off ). Your satellite box will be deciding on H or V and High or Low band not the Skystar. I think you will get it working ok with a direct LNB connection. You can play with the LNB out when you are set up and working.

The watching tv Satellite programs is a family thing and I dont think i would be allowed to to connect the dish to my PC directly. I suppose I will have to take an LNB or some sort of connection to my PC so the family can watch sat. tv independently. As I am no sat whizz kid I will have to get the sat. engineer out to do this.

This would fit in with my thinking as i currently can watch BBC and ITV channels on my pc-tv card on my computer.

thanks for the advice Sticks

I fear you may be riight, in the many dark hours I have spent trying to remedy this prob. I have phoned the supplier who said if watching from an LNB out connection only one program will be seen and that is the one on the Sat Receiver. I wonder if this is the same with other PC -Sat-tv cards. Now I 'm wondering if I should have paid a bit more for a Sat receiver with PVR.

My intentions were to record on an external big fat hard disk so I could burn the files as DVDs, VCDs or SVCD etc.

thanks for the support Chops

Just fit a twin or quad LNB to your dish (very easy to do, no specialist training required) and run a cable direct to your SS2, problem solved. :)

With regard to the loopthrough viewing, the SS2 can view any channel available on the same band and polarity as the main receiver, so it won't be just one channel, vut several, still an unsatisfactory situation though in my opinion.

I live in South East London in the picturesque borough of Lewsham in fact its Forest hill. If any one can help for a small sum I would be most pleased. Am I allowed to give my email address on this forum??
