Can someone please explain to the beginner whats the REAL difference between Dreambox 500 and 7020? I know one has HDD possibility and the other not, but besides that? Is it really worth to invest much more is HDD is not so important? Thanks for all your help.

It has a HDD, it has two tuners, it has a USB connector, CF slot, two card readers and a CAM slot, just a different unit, not really comparable.

Why does it have a Compact Flash Slot?

Also, is it as supported as the DM500?

Thanks

You can use the compact flash for multiboot or Var storage i believe, haven't used it personalyy. Yes, probably as well supported as the 500. :)

I wondered about that 2-tuner issue too ;)

But then again, I am at the point where I decide to go for a cheapo Dreambox or more expensive version....I would run Gemini (I'd say), not often change images, use storage on PC for recording......so do I need the "bigger" box...?

If you buy a 500 and then want a bigger brother you'll easily sell it on fleabay (especially if an image, emu and keys are loaded).

I think the 500 ticks the boxes I need (read: the wife will allow :-bash) and my only reservation is that the lack of slot for a Dragon might slow me down.

I do believe with Gemini image, though, that I'd be up and running fairly quickly with the same "features" as the Dragon? And that my 'net-connected DB will actually be more efficient in some ways?

It's too small to fit a dragon. It is CAT5 so easily interneted and HD recording is easy enough.

yep, this would be my solution - but newcamd would provide everything Dragon provides, I think?

I was in the same position I got myself a 500 first, I have now got a 7020s
the 500 is still used in the lounge but just for sky, and I use the 7020 for multi sats and sky ie multiroom, I like the 500s but I found I had few issues with motor problems hence why I just use it for sky and my local cs, but its a great little box and imho just the same as the 7020 s/w wise..
and like u also said the 500 together with a pc works a treat for recording..
So just down to budget if you ask me...

I had a DM500 for over a year and was very happy, but I did upgrade to a 7020 this year as I wanted a HD, better hand control, the fact it can be flashed over LAN and lots more like the compact flash slot.

The 7020 seems to work nicer streaming too, the 500 used to have the odd brake up
