I am a newbie on Dreambox 500S and want to purchase but the dealer says I have to pay US$150 per year for accessing the adsl connection.

Now tell me is it required to pay him or I can use the free server without paying him any money. or if I dont use the server what disadvantage I will face.

Thanks

U don´t need an internet connection but it will help having one

A dialup is OK, just for upgrading files and keys

the DBox is made for the internet :) but will work without it

is this some card-sharing service he's offering?

Personally, you don't need it. There are no operating costs associated with a DM500.

Hey at home i have a wireless internet connection yeah on my laptop, the dreambox 500-s is in my bedroom and the router is downstairs, will i be able to plug the dreambox via eithernet into my laptop and then connect to the internet via wireless and do it that way or will it have to be plugged straight into the router when i want to upgrade something?

also just because the box is linux based it doesnt mean i have to have a linux based machine to comply with it does it? i can still use windows to send/receiver stuff from it because i know what some linux stuff is like, annoying.

thanks

It can be done

but upgrading is recommended by cable, if U lose signal for just a sec
U won´t get the box working without some heavy problems

Well, I´ve done it but I am prepared with a null-modem cable

ok so its best to go cable because if i loose a wireless signal for just a second the whole system will just totally mess up and ill have to reset everything?

ok well i probably wont leave it plugged in all the time anyways, only when i need to update stuff. thanks for the reply

I have seen these adds and they are pushing card sharing, Steer well clear m8.
But as Dig Deep says you do need a connection to make the most of a dreambox
