Dreambox internet connection

Hi all, I am a newbie to this Dreambox forum , but I hope one of you can help me.
I recently bought a Dreambox 7000S fully motorised system, and am very happy with it. The box came with a very old version of Enigma on it 1.05 I think so I decided to upgrade it to the latest version 1.08. Once I had a play with this image I decided to upgrade to Hydra Lucien. I managed to get this image onto the box via Null modem, but I can’t seem to connect the box to the net. I am running windows XP, and my broadband service is with Wanadoo.
My mate seems to think it is something to do with Wanadoo and port numbers, but I just don’t know. This is really bugging me O-no so all help would be appreciated.

Hiya,

The port numbers will not affect the dreambox from connecting to the Net.

How is it all plugged in?

Do you have a cable modem plugged into a hub and your Pc and dreambox
plugged into the hub?

Have you checked the IP address details of the dreambox.

If you can post with a bit more info and we will be able to help you.

The DB is connected via crossover cable, and seem to work fine with FTP software and DreamEdit ect. so I don't think it is a connection issue.

My computer connects to the net via external USB modem and the crossover cable plugs into my network adapter on the back of my PC.

I have used the information in IP config for my settings on the DB connections page but no joy as yet.

Ask yourself this - how can the DB see the internet if it has to go through your PC?

Most of the people here would be connecting the DB to a hub which in turn shares a cable modem of one description or another.

you maybe able to install ICS on windows XP and set it up for the DB to pass thru but I am not sure if anyone has tried that?

It sounds like you will have to download and apply settings via FTP.

You can update the keys on the DB using the program mentioned within TG idiots Guide II at the top of this forum.

If you cannot see the DB anymore its because the IP settings of the DB are different to XP - they both have to be on the same subnet.

e.g PC :- 192.168.0.1 DB :- 192.168.0.2

Check you pc and check the DB, add the same address to your DB but change the last octect to be a higher number as above.

If you go the hub route remember to change your Ethernet cable to normal as opposed to crossover ;-)

It is the easiest way as your PC doesn't need to be on for the box to update etc.

You must set your PC up as an ICS gateway. Go to your Network connections section in Control Panel, right click the Wanadoo Internet connection, then Properties, then the Advanced tab. You'll see the option to share here. Reboot everything. Set the gateway address in the DB to that of your PC. Same with DNS address. Forget all that rubbish about using your ISP's DNS address.

I think i have the same set up as yourself. My Crossover cable connects to my db 7000 via ethernet port at back of computer, I set up network wizzard and everything is working fine. ip 192.168.0.24 gateway 192.168.0.1 You could try this if everything fails.

Example:

IP: 192.168.0.24
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Nameserver: 127.0.0.1 (or 192.168.0.1 if you are using ICS and the PC IP is 192.168.0.1)
Gateway: 127.0.0.1 (or 192.168.0.1 if you are using ICS and the PC IP is 192.168.0.1)

Ive had a laptop using the conection too to verify that the internet can be seen from the DB plug...

Note : Wanadoo do block ports, however concensise in the support room is that port 80 isnt blocked... Very Vauge...

when ive set the DB to the above example and used the update option on DB it waits for about 10 seconds before telling me that "Host Name could not be resolved"

But if i do use the anything other than the 192.168.0.1 then it kicks out imediatly..
So it seems that using the 0.1. it is trying...
All firewalls are disabled while i'm doing this...

Ive passed week one where everyone want to throw the DB out the window,
and i'm into week 3 and its going out the window and down the street now lol.

So a summary of settings for all...
DB7000
1 crossover cable
1 pc xp installed
1 usb Broaband Modem
1 Internet connection sharing enabled
DHCP is not ticked on the DB connection settings.
Sub mask of 255.255.255.0

Pining the box on 192.168.0.24 works fine..

John Graydone : ip 192.168.0.24 gateway 192.168.0.1 You could try this if everything fails.

I have and it still fails ?

Anyone else that can help me ? Any idea's ?
I can only assume its a wanadoo thing...

My DB is now positioned like a rugby ball ready to strike between the goals..
Should get a good distance down the street with that....

Any help in advance would be greatly appreciated..

Try enabling dhcp.

With DHCP enabled it should also pick up DNS info which could be the key element for the update - depending if it looks for host name or IP address.

You can update the box in other ways anyway so its not the end of the world.

You can use the key updater software which you run on the PC to update the DB - the link for this is in TG's idiot guide mkII at the top of the forum page.

which makes it impossible to connect to the DB from the PC
As the DHCP changes the ip each time i re-connect..
(honestly dont know what DHCP does, but sounds like dynamic host CP)

I know there are other ways to update the box but, its one of those

"YOU WILL NOT BEAT ME" situations..

As frustratating as it is, there has to be an explination..

A test we have lined up for later, is to set it all up again on my mates Pc
that uses a driect Lan to the internet. (NTL)
This will be to exclude if there are any wanadoo (freeserve) Problems..

But please keep the sugestions coming,
as i'm sure anyone else in the same boat will use this a guide to help them.
They may also want to line there DB up with some rugby posts too lol..

I had all these problems, and so did cdpdesign 45. We ran the network wizzard and then he sorted it out himself. I suggest you do the same and make a network bridge. my ip just kept changing all the time like you until i done this. I know your fed up reading ,but read through the cdpdesign 45 (charles) threads and you might find an idea there.

any idea's has to be a good idea until tested...

It sounds daft but i'm glad to hear that there are others who have had
simular problems in the past and resolved them..
But there seems to be so little information to help with this problem,
hence starting my own thread in the hope others may learn and also help me.

What ever the out come i will post the results and info for all.
And if its a little tick box or XP sp2 i will go nuts lol....

I don't think its a Wanadoo thing. I have the same setup - Wanadoo broadband via the USB Speedtouch modem into an XP machine, which I am trying to share with a laptop. No Dreambox --yet, just waiting for Father Christmas. I spent an evening of trying to get ICS working from an XP PC without any luck. Icould ping the laptop from XP and ping the XP machine from the (Win 98) laptop but no internet access from the laptop. And of course every time you make the slightest change you have to reboot ...

Because the XP machine dual-boots with Linux Fedora, I tried that the following night. A short script file, 10 mins at the most, no rebooting and it works.

So when the Dreambox does get here, it will talk to the outside world through a linux box.

Unless of course I get an adsl modem/router ....

Ive allready established that i have internet connection sharing working ?
Plugged a laptop in the Rj45 end that would go into the back of the DB
And Voilla, the internet is waitng for me, no problem..

So ive established the internet connection sharing works,
but it wont work via the DB??

Which after reading point to the network not being configured correctly?
But reading the Tutorial which i linked to earlier, it gives you the exact
settings for ICS but they dont work

But i'm gonna keep on trying

I dont know why but i have a hunch that wanadoo are blocking port 80...

I changed mine from port 80 to port 1. as you said try everything..

I can see why when it should work it does work..

So what's changed ?

Ive taken my DB to a friends who uses NTL as a provider...
I'm currently on wanadoo

And it works sweet as a nut

So my problems are at home ?

Sherlock and Watson on the case ...

Well, I am reading this thread with a lot of interest, but if you run WinXp the connection wizzard should sort you out...I did mine this way without having any idea about setting up networks. Keep trying, is probably only a small thing. Maybe look at the screenshots in the Idiot guide of the network settings http://www.satellites.co.uk/php-bin/forum/showpost.php?p=143587&postcount=12

Also, and this is a longshot: I had once or twice in the past situations where I could not connect to the internet with various images. God knows I tried a few. Sometimes going for a flash erase and starting "fresh" might be the magic thing....Erase the bastard image, go to the connection settings, sort them out and try to connect to the net.

Port 80 has been used for a lot of DDoS attacks.

You are sure the XP firewall is OFF?

If you do a search on Google for Wanadoo port 80 blocking you will get a lot of information - 6000 pages (not all useful)

It will work in the end - they always do!

Are you sure that you have the DNS setting on the Dreambox set to the IP of the PC you are using as your ICS gateway?!?!?!
