Hi,
I am trying to avoid long and extensive tests to discover all about this subject.
There seems to be little or nothing about disk format(s) acceptable to this product.
There seems to be nothing at all on relative performance and any limitations of each format.
Any help on this gratefully accepted.
Thank you.
Bin.

Sorry but I can't really be of much help on this as another F15 user. You are suffering from the lack of support and available information that other end users of this great receiver have come across too. One of the members on here has recently been in touch with Germany about some issues and I guess we'll just have to wait.

I can only tell you that I use a USB key formatted to FAT32 with the Media player on my F15. I don't record programming from the F15 so can't usefully comment on performances and limitations.

Pete is correct ...
A connected portable usb drive is also formatted by the F15 to fat32
This will have the usual fat 32 limitations on recorded file size...and although I have never made a sizeable recording on the drive ..I would assume the 2.XX gb rule will apply ..ie..
If the recorded file ..say a movie ..exceeds or creates a file larger than 2gb ..due to its run time ...the .ts file created will be broken into chunks of 2gb approx by the F15 during the recording process..

Without wishing to hijack the thread, does this affect any files on the USB key which are over 2GB? I have a few movies which are about 3GB in size, will the media player either refuse to play them or through software 'split' them into playable chunks?

Can't answer that for sure Pete ...but I assumed that you cannot write a 3gb file to a fat32 formatted drive of any kind.
I may be totally wrong on this ..
Which is why NTFS has the edge for large files...but of course the F15 _I assume_ cannot recognise an NTFS formatted drive.
Probably why you can't play 'em
The F15 splits the recorded file on the fly I would think...so I guess you'd have to do it manually on a pc then port the chunks onto a fat32 drive to play with the F15s media player..
If any real expert wants to jump in here ...you'd be educating me too..

Before this goes totally OT, it seems you can write a file over 3GB to a FAT32 drive.

I think FAT32 has a 4GB limit so anything larger would simply fail when copying over to the USB device. I seem to remember on XP you get a confusing message about the disk being full or something.

..well that certainly told me ....lol...
Don't know why I thought that ...unless its fat32 under linux thats an issue..
We really need an expert to tell us what the limitations are ..
I do know for sure this is how the cuberevo handled long files ..it chopped em up during the write to HD...but that may not be fat32 ...but maybe a proprietory linux format.

I don't know if it will help the OP, but neither the DrHD or the VU+ will play that AVI file of over 3GB. It may be a memory issue in both cases or the Linux OS (is the DrHD Linux?). I can remember having watched over 3GB movies before on both STB's but now have a feeling they were split into two files.

Could be a memory issue. Certainly on a Technomate box when it's recording it tends to split files into 1.5GB chunks, and although I haven't used the F15's recording features for more than a few seconds test, I assume it would do something similar.
