Echostar System Locked Up! Help!

P

I've got a problem with my system. I've a Echostar 2500iD receiver/positoner. I hadn't used it for a while and when I tried recently I found that it is locked into a particular channel on hotbird. What that means is that when I turn on the machine...it goes to the previously selected satellite...which in this case is cinestar channel 14 on Hotbird. There does not appear to be any channel there. It does not say that the signal is scrambled or anything it seems to be searching for the channel. I cannot get the receiver to respond to any instructions via the remote to try and get the thing to move to another channel. If I turn it off...it simply goes again the the last channel used ie Cinestar and I can get no further with the damn thing!

Any ideas?

I do need some help here!

Thanks in anticipation.

Are you sure its a 2500id ? This is not listed in the Echostar product list

What does it say on the TV screen and front panel when first plugged in ?

First things first would be to confirm the remote control is actually working, and set to the right configuration for your machine

Come back with these answers and Ill search a bit further

Thanks Channel Hopper,

The serial No. is D-2500IP in actual fact!

This is on the remote.and the receiver. I think it is something to do with the fact that there was a channel stored but the channel isn't being used/transmitting. The unit seems to be waiting for the channel to be found before letting me go any further.

Hi,

When you say you have switched it off, do you mean actually unplugged from mains or just onto standby? If the latter, try the former.

Cheers

Peter,

sorry for a dumb suggestion/ question. :)

Just to take the remote control unit out of the equation and further elaborate on the last CH's suggestion.
There are buttons on the front panel of the receiver - "Ok", "Menu", Arrows - did you try pressing those and, if yes, then what happened?

If those do not work and you tried switching it on/off at mains socket, check if the coaxial cable from the antenna LNB is connected and if so, try disconnecting it.
If it is NOT connected, then connect it!

Last but not least thing to do is to locate and take out all viewing cards and CI modules.

May be those actions will help you.

Good luck.

If none of the above should work, then you can also try,

within the menu select the reset - back to the original has supplied format option.

This should allow you to re-program your reciever- a lot of work but normally works.

What version of software do you have in your 2500 ? check the Echostar website to ensure that you have the latest, has the problem you originally identiifed was a common problem and still a lesser problem

Haave had similar problems in past. What cured it was the latest software up-date and a manufacturers re-set.

Problem solved.

Try it with the lead from the LNB disconnected, it will then come up with no signal and you should be able to change channel.

Channel Hopper......the remote does allow me turn on/off. When I touch other buttons the light on the receiver lights up...but thats it.

I think it could be a software problem....I have emailed Echostar. But what do they do? I don't see how I can reprogramme anything?!

????

I will try some of the other suggestions mentioned here. Thanks for your help!

I just turned off the unit...ie switch at the back and disconnected the LNB. Turned it back on....and just the same. Displays the channel....and I cannot change anything. This thing is pretty well screwed.

Is thee a button marked SAT on the remote

It may be that you have to press this first before accessing any features (the later Echostar remotes , are designed to operate more than one piece of consumer electronics , it may be its set to TV or VCR )

Older remotes also had a set of jumpers in the back, which if moved change the operating pulses of the Infra red.

I have had exactly the same problem!
To get the receiver functioning again, what you have to do is turn it on and keep pressing the channel up button continuously so that the channel goes upwards. Start doing this straight away because if you let the thing settle first the receiver will not respond at all.
When you get to a channel above number 50 it should work fine again.
If you go back to the low number channels on hot bird it will freeze up once more and will continue doing so, i don't know why this is.
How do i get a software update for my 2500, i haven't got a clue how to do it?
Anyway, Good Luck.
If you have any problems at all e mail me and i will ring you and talk you through the process of unfreezing it while you are there.
Cheers.
Stan.

That's quite an ingenious fix Stan. Hope it works for Peter. As for updating your software it can only be done via a PC and not 'Over the Air' (OTA) as some Echostar models can. You can locate the latest software by logging on to the Echostar web site via the following link:
http://www.echostar-int.com/b2c/home/home.asp

You need to register before you can download the software to your PC. The latest version is 308 released 27th March 2002. It was to fix TPS problems on Hotbird. How long have you had your receiver?

Stan.....I've tried the fix....but it doesn't work for me. It is still stuck.

I think I will have to get the extra software but once you've downloaded it...how do you get it into your receiver etc.

?

That's a shame the fix didn't work Peter. Full instructions are given on the Echostar web site for updating and they can be printed off.

If none of the suggestions have worked for you, then the only ways to resolve the problem are normally the reset/ replacement of the EEPROM- many of the early 2500 and 3000 required this when the bootstrap changed from the 0200 release through the 0300 firmware change.

Dependent upon your experience with soldering it can be replaced -it is a very small fine pitch device - requiring excellent and slight specialist soldering skills.

Or return your reciever to Echostar (Netherlands)or its agent for repair - in the UK this is by.

Thanks for your help lads!
I have had my receiver for two years.
Peter keep trying what i told you to unlock it, it will unfreeze it but not rectify it!
How do you transfer downloaded files on the PC to the receiver!
Cheers

In case you missed my earlier post Stan, full instructions for downloading and updating (via a PC) are on the Echostar web site for each receiver and release of software.
