Anyone got any thoughts as to what size dish is going to be needed for the downlink in NW Europe?

Will probably be a Yagi opposed to a dish.

A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

12/13cm uplinking requires quite a bit of gain and directionability from a yagi so has to be very well constructed.
It might be preferred in Europe but in the US an ex-TVRO mesh antenna would be the cheapest way to get a signal out there.

Both types will require a similar dual axis tracking system, but with the Yagi array there is the added combining and phase distribution.

Agreed, but a quite simple Yagi is all that will be needed for the downlink.

Ordered some cheap (£3ish) PLL LNB's to mess around with, 25MHz crystal inside should work fine for this.
Might put a 24/23MHz crystal on one of the form some 10GHz DATV stuff.

Cheap PLL LNB's turned up, work well in 10GHz band :)

Absolutely, currently building a DATV transmitter for a few different bands as well, it's based on the Portsdown project, hopefully one day
I will be able to send some video up to Es'hail 2

Was using the GPIO pins on the Pi earlier to generate RF and was receiving it on my SDR! crazy what a Pi can do.

That Portdown transmitter looks fascinating. :)

Install the Portsdown software on a Pi, put a LCD on top (Waveshare 3.5") and have a play, plug in a RTL-SDR and receive DATV if there is any in your area.

Bugger all I would imagine - there are only 2 amateur radio clubs in the area in a 30 mile radius. This is a very low population area - the entire population of the Borders is only about 130k & the 2 reasonable size towns (Galashiels & Hawick) are both less than 20k

You can transmit/receive across the room with just 2 Pi's if you're bored, look at this. Not me by the way!

Probably the easiest way to get a TX is to use DATV-Express with a LimeSDR or ADALM_PLUTO. The latter was £70 +VAT from Mouser but has limited bandwidth due to USB2. If it's for Es'hail 2 then 2Ms/s is the plenty. Using a LimeMini I could get about 4Ms/s on an i3 laptop but you should get more by using a better PC.
About - DATV-Express digital-ATV project
I've used the TBS6983/6903 down to 125ks/s but they don't blind scan very well at that symbol rate.

Im considering the Lime SDR Mini as I don't need below 10MHz
My friend has a DATV Express, but I think he wishes now he'd gone down the Lime route.
