I unticked the MDD & BMD boxes & didnt bother with training channel. It let me have the rest - Once I get it up and running I may well scale back the number of channels Im receiving - the data dissemination is said to be pretty hefty with everything coming in (multi GB in an afternoon)

To be honest I suspect most of us wont want much more than the weather pics - sea level info probaly wont be of much interest to your avaerage enthusiast!

Tsunami plotting, or even general tectonic shift.

If it is quick enough you might also get timing of river wash events though this is usually almanac predictive

I had an email from Eumetsat this afternoon querying one of two of my choices as they were not permitted without the correct accreditation. I just asked them to remove anything I wasnt supposed to have ticked and suggested the web page could have been clearer . :D

If you sign up I advise that you dont tick anything that has Restricted to Member State NMHSs and partner organisations or NMS Data Distribution BMD & MDD next to it - it causes a lot of emails querying your rights to access it!! :-rofl2

The ladies in their office are very nice and helpful though :D

Mine has arrived too. I think Im going to go for a dedicated build too. Its going to need a fairly big hdd as there are multi Gb a day of data pulled down if you requested everything. Although I do have a spare nasbox lying around in my stash that might be useful for the data.

Also need to buy the pc card as I definitely dont have anything suitable hidden away.

According to the EMC website the following computer specs are needed

  • Stand alone reception stations are recommended (with no Virtual Systems or Network-attached storage).
  • 64bit CPU.
  • 64bit operating system (Linux, Windows)
  • 4 GB RAM or larger
  • 1GB network interfaces (for DVB router and LAN)
  • USB 2.0 (for EKU)
  • Latest EUMETCast (Tellicast) client software
So not particularly taxing I dont think. Ive got another i3 Asus P8H61-I LX which I picked up dirt cheap lying around in a case not doing much atm so that may well become the eumetsat computer.

Hmm ..
My Optiplex 990 _could_ be repurposed I suppose ..
I think it will support a win7 64 bit OS ..though currently 32 bit ..
how crucial is 64 bit I wonder..
Core i5 2400 cpu..
can take 8gb ram
and a 1tb hard drive but I could go larger if I move to 64bit
lan speed is doubtfull 1gb ..
built in is 10/100 ..
again ..is this crucial ?
It would mean moving all my other SDR apps to a lesser PC ..
I guess its gonna be trial and error here as I dont wanna start building a higher spec PC.

...basically one of these ..with win7

The only real advantage of 64 bit on the age computers we are using (my mobo will be 6 or 7 years old I think) is you can use more than 4 gig ram in them. LAN speed probably isnt going to be critical - big file transfers will just take longer. Lets be honest for what we will be doing it doesnt really matter if a transfer takes a minute instead of 10 seconds does it?.

..Just out of curiosity AS ..
Which tuner have you opted for with Eumetsat ?
I chose to go down the usb route ..
To keep temperature down inside the SFF PC ..
I ordered a TBS 5927 ....which hopefully I wont get clobbered with import duties on ...
Theoretically saved over £40 buying it on aliEx ..
but it will take time to arrive...not that I'm in a hurry.
My MS coupled with lousy weather making it difficult to function atm.

Ive just ordered the dongle and licence, just by chance somebody next door to the job I was on had unloaded a complete (bar hdd) Dimension 9150 PC in the skip minutes after I turned up.

She powers up and looks good enough for the job.

I'll ask some questions & fill in the info here as to how to sign up for the dongle & s/w.

Standard Ku - 11263H & 11387H are the 2 frequencies, different data is disseminated on each channel although I cant remember whats on which one - its on the Eumesat site as Ive seen it not too long ago.

11387H is shown on the Lyngsat site, 11263 is missing.

I can finally use that 8920 card you sent down a few years back. It's been awaiting a decent case. I have a couple of data drives from the sky boxes.

I also found one of these discarded just before Christmas, but will have to find a valid key.

I had a quick look inside the 9150 earlier, apart from the second DVD/RW drive, it also has the full matched 4GB DDR2 set and the COA Media Edition code on the top :D

Pretty much the same hardware spec as my old clunker 5150. Put a ssd in it and it will improve it no end. :)
