I looks like Eutelsat 48B (the former Eutelsat W2M that started on 16 East), according TLE data arrived at 28.5 East yesterday!
It has transponders between 10950...11700 and 12500...12750, but some may not be available since a power fault that happened a few years ago.

Eutelsat 28A (Eurobird 1) is from 2001, some spare capacity around is better than nothing?

Almost certaimnly backup for Eutel 28A. Shes getting very long in the tooth. Theres also the possibility of opening up new areas from the 28E slot if they slew the beams around.

I was hoping Eutelsat 28A had a few years left in her... it might be all we can easily receive in Finland soon.:-doh!

If one of those steerable beams still works it could make quite a tight footprint if they steer some of it over the Atlantic... What do you think? Not current technology tight but still similar to Astra 2D maybe?

On the other hand those wide beams could be nice for Europe.

Apart from battery charge problems its a perfectly healthy spacecraft. As long as the solar sails are illuminated she will pump out plenty of power - its only during the autumn & spring eclipse season she will be down on power.

*IF* Eutel 48B (probably soon to be renamed 28:cool: does indeed go on air at 28E she can only transmit in the 11200-11700 Mhz & 12500-12750MHz bands.

Solly we dont have any prior knowledge of whats going to happen - its all guesswork, so no point asking which frequencies will move. It might be all of them, it might be none of them.

However I guarantee that if things do move the reception will be different in the fringe areas!

EUTELSAT STATEMENT ON THE W2M SATELLITE

Paris, 28 January 2009

Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris: ETL) announces that the performance of the W2M satellite, which was launched on 20 December 2008, does not comply with the requirements set with the spacecraft’s manufacturer, EADS Astrium/ISRO Antrix, following a major anomaly affecting the satellite’s power subsystem. This anomaly occurred during the satellite’s transfer from the location used for in-orbit tests to its operating position at 16 degrees East where its mission was to replace well in advance Eutelsat’s W2 satellite.

W2M / 48B has now been renamed as 28B (just as I predicted ):D

I think that confirms she will be going into service in the not too distant future.

How will it ever work for Sky stuff on a mini-dish? It barely delivered the goods from 16E on a 1m dish.

Makes you wonder if they'll offload some of E28A's Txp's on to E28B's to reduce the loading and deal with any potential power issues on board E28A? They do seem to have moved this second bird around fairly quickly so guess it is needed sooner rather than later.

As Captain Jack mentioned, the field strength at 16E was pretty poor for W2M, maybe the plan is to use one of it's spotbeams rather than the Pan European beams to increase field strength over the UK? It also means Eutelsat could possibly be able to offer spotbeam capacity too now, how well the spot would work we'd have to see as the craft wasn't developed for 28E but if that beam is steerable maybe they could achieve something comparable to what 2D had?

Ah but weren't the beams slewed fairly well east?

Sesat1 was just horrible at 16E here, and W2M was weakish.

And now
