Its no shock at all. Restricted beams is the future of satellites. Its what the broadcasters hosted on the platforms want. We might not like it as hobbyists wanting to be able to receive everything but we dont pay the bills for running these multi million $$ craft

Of course, these satellites again will have just one beam, covering BOTH Europe and MENA.

Maybe it will crash on the way up - just like Astra 1K did with its highly divisive beam structure...

You can read this as the areas that are being served by the satellite. Eg. The Eutelsat 5W B hasn't got a specific France beam and an Italy Beam. Though you see "France, Italy, Algeria". Those are the areas where the beams of this satellite are used. Whilst we can think of two beams, one for France, one for Italy, by reading this, there will be one "Transalpine Beam" serving both France and Italy.

So... Same for Hotbird. This theory can be in line with Umair Malik 's reaction #7. The current Hotbird satellites are also shown as Europe and MENA. Though it's only one beam, serving those two aereas.

Just my opinion though... I can be wrong!

Even from a commercial point of view, 13E is not planned to use spotbeams with its current cliente, because granted some paytv providers may not care but there are others who pay for the exact wide coverage they are provided.

I certainly hope thats correct - 13E is one of my favourite slots due to the wide variety of fta stations on it :)

At this point it's only speculation, but new satellites that were put into service at 28.2° East, 9° East or 5° West show what's possible with modern satellite technology.

It will be interesting to see, if the next generation of satellites at European key positions like 13° East and 19,2° East will get spotbeams and frequency reuse.

Germany is the last country with FTA-broadcasting on a Paneuropean beam, after the main Ukrainian TV broadcasters started encrypting their channels last night.

We could see Transalpine Beams (Tivusat, Sky Italia, Swiss public TV, BIS TV) and a Northeast Beam (Polish Pay TV, Xtra TV Ukraine) on Hotbird or a Southwest Beam (Spain) and a Northern Beam (Germany) on Astra 1. Frequency reuse could lead to permanent black outs in parts of France and the British Isles.

Hopefully I will still be able to receive German TV if it's put on a Northern beam which will almost certainly cover the Southern parts of Scandinavia.

I wonder what the European Commission and such have to say or think about this...
I mean, this is just not merely a technical point of view matter. It has many implications beyond that.

After WWII there was a dream of European spirit that would grant us decades of peace and economic growth. And this has been partly accomplished! And I know the European Commission has policies directed to foment this point, for example the Trans-European Erasmus program and others. Euronews was, I think, another example in the beginning.

The Television Without Frontiers (TSF) directive exists... but has it been defended enough?
I'm not against commercial broadcasters and providers doing whatever they think is best for their business. But, in parallel with this, I strongly defend that it should be somehow enabled, permitted, fomented that each European citizen can see and hear, at least the Public Broadcaster of any other country in the EU, and I'm not talking about international versions. I'm talking about feeling like we are in that country, being treated by the broadcaster the same way.

This is one aspect of this hobby that always gave me enthusiasm and an unique insight to other cultures within Europe. I have learned so much (specially in the 80's and 90's) about each European country by watching its Public TV Services. Deep respect for the differences, appreciation for the details in each country. Europe is so rich and diverse, but if we start building frontiers again, we will be poorer in all aspects in the long run.

So, what I would expect from the EU is that the policies for the Audiovisual sector would defend more a true EU AV market.
