Well it is true - as far as it goes -that the radiation from Chernobyl spread over a massive area, but it is also true that, apart from the downturn in Lamb prices I refereed to earlier, there was zero risk other than in the vicinity of the incident.

The USA population need not panic buy foil hats.

They needn't worry, not much in their craniums to protect anyway.

Just as bad with "normal" people here in UK: I've been listening to the J Y Vine Prog on Radio 2 and theusual intolerant, ignorant and immoderate crew were out in force. Fulminate? Not I. I merely rolled my eyes.

Thats interesting, I didnt know that there was a buildup of smaller quakes in the two days leading leading up to the big one.

Breaking news on NHK. An explosion has been heard in Reactor 2 as well. No indication yet if its the pressure vessel

No real surprise, the Japanese did ask for help a few hours ago, from any nuclear station experts.

Both diesil generators that pumped seawater into the cooling pipes of reactor 1 have been taken offline, and the engineers are unable to keep reactor 3 in a safe temperature zone.

A 30km exclusion zone is now recommended.

Weather for the next few days around Tokyo, not good. A south westerly wind and then freezing nights.

Earlier remarks about scaremongering notwithstanding, this really does sound to be potentially very serious indeed.

If radiation levels become unduly high over a wide area, it's difficult to see how emergency response can be implemented efficiently and expediently as the aid workers could be at risk themselves.

So the likely response would perhaps be a mass exodus to safe areas.

That said, BBC News reports the latest fire has been extinguished. Hopefully a good omen.

The fire was in reactor 4, which was apparently not in service. So either the water has stopped circulating completely, or there is a leak in the pipes that they cannot patch up.
Scaremongering is simple wrecklessness by those wanting to be first with the 'news', or want to sell something.
Facts make far better journalism, wild speculation really only works in Bmovie scripts.

Actually, there was one piece of journalism that got my back up yesterday, and it was on the BBC news channel.

They got one 'expert' in who suggested the whole idea of 'atomic energy' needs a rethink worldwide as a result of the current disaster. :confused

The only issue I can see here is the unknowns of building a plant in areas of high earthquake activity. Much of the land where energy might be required from this technology sits nowhere near any tectonic plate edges.
Additionally, many more have died as a direct result of the logistics of producing other forms of power.

Another set of land based earthquakes, too large to be aftershocks as such.

Rather odd comparison, the current situation in Japan has nothing to do with design flaws, nor poor performance of employees to work on a solution to potential meltdown.

I doubt anyone is going to sucessfully sue the manufacturer, operator, or safety inspectors for falsifying documentation either.

The Chinese are currently re-thinking their designs for future Nuclear power station builds in light of recent events in Japan ..

Safety must always be paramount ..

Purely from a practical standpoint ..
I'm wondering why reactors couldn't be built off shore above sea level..with huge wave breaks surrounding them ...
In the event of an accident or event of an incident ..perhaps explosive devices placed around the base would allow the reactor vessel to be sealed and dropped below the surface to a pre defined depth ...
this would not be desireable but would provide instant and long lasting cooling ..
just a thought..

A stable, and reliable connection ( some 10TWh each year) to the national grid over salt water is my best guess for not commissioning one out at sea.

I totally understand what you're saying CH ..
..and I realise there would be many technical difficulties to overcome ..
Sadly the main reason for not doing a thing is usually 'economic' in nature ..
..but what price do you put on a sick population ..and unuseable environment or landmass for many decades ...

Nonetheless as I have said before ..
My heart goes out to the people of Japan ..
Questioning the 'what ifs ' ..doesn't solve the current crisis..
