Raise a glass to little Sputnik today folks, the first satellite to be launched fifty years ago today.

We've come a long way since then of course, but I still get a thrill remembering receiving its signal as it passed overhead on my ex- WW2 short wave receiver (20.007 Mcycles/sec old money :))

I remember a prezzy from the Beezer which was just a piece of cardboard, circular I think, with 2 small holes about 5 - 10 mm apart in the centre. You threaded 2 pieces of thin string through and then wrapped the ends around your fingers.

By careful pulling apart you could get the carboard to start rotating and winding up the string. After a short while you could get the cardboard whizzing back and forth making a buzzing noise.

You know, you tell the kids of today about this and they think how sad you are but we had great fun with them.

:)Conkers were the thing. I well remeber the bruised knuckles and a black eye where the oponents came of the string.
Drill a hole through the centre, soak then in vinegar for a few weeks and slowly bake in the oven. Like having a ball bearing on a string. Probaly not allowed now due to H&S regs.
