I've never understood the reluctance of governments to pay a good wage to emergency services. Personally I believe that emergency services and teachers should be amongst the most highly paid individuals in society, not the lowest. For some reason we don't recognise that. I'd increase upper tax rates and use it to fund pay increases for those people. But I'm a socialist. I fervently believe in a more even distribution of wealth than the UK achieves. It is simply obscene that individuals earning literally millions per annum are not asked to contribute a higher percentage of that to their society.

Didn't agree with your view many years ago 2old, but I think that there is now becoming such a huge disparity, not only between the highes and the lowest, but now between the low and high in the huge middle income area. This is becoming more and more evident in the prices being achieved for housing. In my area, a one bedroom house is now circa £100,000, ridiculous, particularly bearing in mind that a single fireman, with a £10,000 saved deposit, would still struggle to buy. This of course goes further than Firemen, Nurses etc, the average working man will soon not be able to afford property, even with a second income from a spouse.

The average salary in certain areas is being hugely inflated by a relatively small percentage of disproportionately high earning occupations, I would guess that the average is worked out on a mean basis, rather than modal, which would give a far more accurate idea.

Indeed. Lets promote a new campaign poster NFU

Become a fireman in the North. Bigger house = same pay.

Like it or lump it.

I am right wing,i have to agree with Rolf on this on the probs we have with the hangers on who think there are due and take the
benifits that our hard working people work and get out your beds
for. I would suggest apart from our health service to go free enterprice, because when i bought a house in Spain the community wanted to employ people, where as i wanted to put out to tender, which i thought was more econonical. thats how it should be.

Thats my thoughts.

Sorry

It appears that the norm for any working class citizen to survive in this country is with two or maybe three jobs, and with the better half bringing in an income as well

No wonder fast food and TV dinners are now commonplace, with kids and elders becoming obese

Never off at a tangent.

I am gonna upset a few people here but let the TRUTH be know.
First of all a firemans wage cannot be compared with a police officer. (I am not a police lover especially road traffic) But their
job is far more stressfull and dangerous.Police are by their nature
segregated from the rest of society so wages must be different (nobody gets that freindly with a copper) its a matter of how far to trust them in any conversation. Hence most coppers have coppers as mates.
As for a 40% wage rise. Whatever the rate of inflation is thats it.
As for green goddesses (Let the army use the standard fire equipment at the local fire-station). Bollacks to not trained to use
They are the army they are not trained to use 1940 steam engines. If pickets are in the way (LOCK EM UP) This is our equipment (rate payers) I for 1 would rather see a novice in a new engine than a clapped out banger.Infact if the army was told to use normal engines i am sure they wouldn`t be striking at all.
GREEDY TW*TS so near bonfire nite, Every kid that hurt or killed
hope they spend that with their rise,

Thanks Chips, but as you no you should keep your eyes on the pan,as for the police, they come down to our baker shop the only one in Glencoe, and eat all the pies and there are none left for us.
so what do you think of these fat belly boys in blue, not alot as you say. I would like to see them getting up and doing a wee bit training and keep them fit as the firemen and drop a few £pounds
on there wages for the people who can do a good job for all of us.
thanks for your reply "Chips" and watch your pan.

I really don't want bang on about it but,

I think that this pay rise for firemen was honed around 9/11. Tragic as it was for many USA firemen, I've just got this gut feeling that the UK firemen seem to feel hard done by.

Is playing cards in the evening then tearing down the motorway at 3.00am that bad;)

In reply to mikeey: about fat coppers. When i was a lad.
"When Long John Silvers parrot was an egg," I was a Lay visitor to the local police station,
(I used to be taken there and LAY down.) And being Mischevous "to say the least,"" I was quick on me toes, But there was always a copper that was faster.
I have been chased by many firemen as well but never been caught. Who`s eating the pies.
The amouny of rise asked for is
Insane for a Job with TOTAL SECURITY,Pension, and good working conditions, Besides Drills to quote a mate of mine (a fireman)he does about 7 hours work (999 incidents) a week. I am a self employed Builder If i was to put up my prices by 40% i am out of work, Doles no good ,about £95.00 for me 3kids and a DRAGON.
If i am ill same again i am Bollocked in fact been working for last 4 weeks with 3 broken fingers . So no hard luck story will wash with me.

If youre friend does only 7 hours a week then apart from cleaning the vehicles, playing cards, etc etc, there should be plenty of time for working a second income.

This could be anything that might be achievable in the fire station,
playing cards, cleaning vehicles, etc etc

A bit of a 'busmans' holiday really

Since they already have access to copious amounts of water, high pressure pumps and cleaning materials, fire stations should have some form of car wash scheme going on out the back, with maybe a drain clearing line of work. If they charged a tenth of what so called expert companies do for the callout, they would not need to ask for more money

Ilike the first part of your reply Chips, very good and i hope you get plenty of work, because there is not many good builders going about these days. Sorry to here about your fingers that puts a damper on things when you go out to work. At least when you bring all the money home at the end of the week, that should cheer U up,plus the wife can kiss your fingers all better.

Chips your okay

Take care of your self.
