I have a silly question: As I never had a 7000, what is the advantage of having multiboots? What can you do with it that you can't do before?

It also makes the image you use in usb/hd much more stable. Hardly ever freezes up.

Hi All,

It makes it far easier to recover from a frozen (corrupt) image, just boot a different one and delete the duff one.
Loads of posts with people using hacked images in DB flash say 'help, cant boot or ftp dreambox, what can I do?' AND we say 'out with DreamUp and null modem cable' AND they try but it doesn't work for some reason (they forget flash erase or something) AND we say try again AND they get frustrated AND then their boot loader goes and they have to do the jtag bit AND we 7000 owners with multiboot and loads of images available at the click of a reboot, sit back smugly AND think 'I wish I could have all that fun'.
No! Sorry, can't think of any reason to have multiboot. Look at all the fun you'll miss!!

73 & happy multibooting.

Another question: Dies it mean though that when you want to reboot (as one does after a while with the 5620 you have to go to your computer, switch it on and choose which image to put on?

Hi All,

As I understand what Music Bob has written, if the NFS is not available then a 56xx/500 will boot its flash image.
Also (not absolutely sure of this one but seems very likely) if you are using one of your NFS multiboot images then your NFS PC must be running all the time.
So, to go back to the first question, if you were using an NFS multiboot image, the PC would already be on anyway, if not the image would not be working!!
As I see it (and I may be wrong) this turns the 56xx/500 into a sort of SkyStar USB (Ethernet)!
One of the reasons I got a DM7000S and not a SkyStar USB was that I did not want to keep a PC running all the time I played sat TV!

73 & happy dreaming.

OK, thanks for the answers. As my kids are using the dreambox (they know how to reboot, change channels and wait for the motor to move etc, but having to get them use the computer for booting would be too much for now....
Anyway, maybe one day I will try it anyway.

I think we touched this subject some time ago, but is it possible to bodge a HD to a 5650 ? That would solve the VAR problem?

Hi T_G,

You could keep a minimal image with one emu (newcamd) and keys in flash and then have other experimental/more expanded images on NFS.

That way you keep the children happy as it boots the flash image in the absense of NFS.

When you want to play with other images you just 'fire up' the PC, reboot the Dreambox and select an NFS multiboot image.

73 & good luck.

PS check your satellites.xml post.

This latest version of flashwizrd pro (MK2) does not recognise my truegrid NFS drive anymore. Not that I want to boor from a mounted drive anyway, as i think usb is the best way.

Hi chuckles,

Music Bob says not to try TrueGrid only MS services for Linux or OmniNFS.

73 & good luck.

With the good walkthrough for installing nfs available and the new Flashwizard pro, multibooting on my 5620 is possible, and I am experimenting with different images.

Also using the "tools" section of Dreambox control centre I can transfer addons to the image in multiboot (for example to upgrade the control panel in the hydra zeus image) but ftp ing directories and files cannot be done with the multiboot in the same way as with an image on the flash.

Any ideas?
