I am not from Cyprus nor I have I ever been there, however upon reading the thread I said I will bring my experience of Satellite Internet to the thread. As bignick said
SkyDSL do a service to Cyprus through their partner
Hellas Digital.
Here in The Republic of Ireland (South West) I use Skydsl (One-way) satellite internet which gives me speeds of 2Mbits down with a data allowance of 3000MB for €19.90 a month. I use Dial-up as my back channel which feeds the data requests to the proxy. ISDN or GPRS can also be used as the back channel for SkyDSL. I am receiving my Signal with an 80cms Channel Master Dish aligned to Atlantic Bird 2 @ 8°West. The service is available off the various satellite position:
- Atlantic Bird 2 at 8° West,
- Eurobird 3 Spot D at 33° East
- Eurobird 3 Spot A at 33° East
- Sesat at 53° East (called Express AM22 on Lyngsat)
From your geographical location in Cyprus SkyDSL could be got off either Sesat at 53° East or off Eurobird 3 Beam D at 33° East according to the Signal Charts I have found.
Lyngsat Chart for Sesat at 53° East
Eutelsat Chart for Sesat at 53° East
Lyngsat Chart for Eurobird 3 Spot D at 33° East
Eutelsat Chart for Eurobird 3 Spot D at 33° East
Up here in Ireland SkyDSL provide a free 80cms grey dish with SkyDSL logo and free equipment (PCI card) and USB Box available for extra, the installation is DIY or get in your own installer. I do not know what the situation is in Cyprus but I have been using SkyDSL in Ireland for over 2 years now and I find it quite it good as there is no ADSL available in my rural part of Ireland yet, however this will be my final year of using SkyDSL as the local telephone is earmarked for upgrade.
If broadband is available in any other form besides satellite I would take it as satellite is not that dear but here in Ireland the backlink (DIAL-UP) is very expensive and the Dial-up 180hrs and SkyDSL costs me about €47 a month when DSL is from €16 a month.
If you are interested in SkyDSL do a search on
www.boards.ie which is a website where I was a member until recently and I wrote loads about the subject search "SkyDSL" and "netwhizkid" and you will find some of my writings on it. If you can speak german, there is forum dedicated to SkyDSL
here but most of what is on it is in the German language.
