If you feel sometimes you have been misdirected to a fraudulent web address and you want to check whether the website you are viewing is actually the one you intended to browse to and especially if you are making online purchases or accessing your bank details, then while you are on a particular website copy and paste the line below into the Address bar in your browser. Then press Enter. It will immediately show you the actual URL in a separate window. If the URL doesn't tally with the one you thought you had browsed to then exit immediately.

javascript:alert("Real web adress:" + location.protocol + "//" + location.hostname + "/");

How can we be sure this command is not fraudulent since address is spelt how I have done it not how it is spelt in the command. :-doh! I am not aware of Java having spelling mistakes in it

It shows the host URL. I tried it on a domain that points to mine (forwarding) and it shows my URL not the one in the address bar.

It's just uses this text to display the message in the window that opens.

You can change the spelling and it has no effect on the Java.

try this...

javascript:alert("Did you connect to here?:" + location.protocol + "//" + location.hostname + "/");

Just someone who can't spell - I know the feeling :(

You can go even better:
Take a favourite in your browser that you don't need anymore or just make a new one in an empty page and replace the URl with the line of the java, and call the favourite "Web Check" or something. When you are going to save it it will warn you that it is not a web site, just ignore and say yes. Then whenever you are in a site you want to check just go to favourites and click on the "web check" and bingo - the lettle window pops up. ;-)
