mediamarkt do them, as do carrefoure and most PC shops

the ones i have seen have UPS / Uninterruptible power supply written on the box

the more you spend the more voltage they can handle and the longer the battery can last.

so make sure you get a UPS with the appropriate voltage capacity for yout TV's, receivers, PC's etc

I have heard that it is posible to receive the BBC1 HD signal on a 1.3m dish in the San Miguel area of Costa Blanca South Spain.

Any one able to confirm this please.

You need to decide what digi-box you're going to use; if you say "freeview" then you can buy a PVR (Personal Video Recorder ...thats a digi-box with a built-in hard drive to record one channel when you watch another). Buy the digi-box in UK from the forum supporting advertisers.

If you want "Freesat" then the PVR for this system isn't out until end of this year. With Freesat you get HD. People have recommended the Humax brand of digi-box to receive Freesat in Costa Blanca where the satellite signal is weak, and this box is good at pulling in weak signals.

I have two friends, one in Gran Alacant, the other in Torrevieja that have been ripped off by so called professional satellite installers, spending many hundreds of euros for systems that only work sometimes, so forgive me if I have a somewhat jaundiced view of such people. Have a look at :-http://www.brymar.co.uk/info/europe_dish_size/Spain/spain.html
I have no knowledge of the Murcia area, but it is a lot further south and as the map shows this makes a hell of a lot of difference.

I have just bought a flat in Calafell (a few k north of Taragona). The map suggests I could get away with 1.5m dish for Freeview - could anyone confirm if that is the case?

Can we please get used to the correct names. Freeview is only available in the mainland UK as it's the terrestrial system i.e. through the ordinary TV aerial.

What you are talking about is Freesat and possibly Freesat from $ky (FFS). FFS is a Digibox with a card supplied by $ly so that you can get a few channels that are FTV (Free to View) but not FTA (Free to Air). A Digibox is only supplied by $ly - it's their trademarked name. All other receivers are only receivers.

$ly do make a box which will record to an internal disc - it's called $ly+. Unfortunately, unless you subscribe to one of their packages, the recording function will cost you £10 a month subscription. If you stop subscribing then your recordings become unavailable to you.

Which brings us to proper Freesat. The Freesat PVR is now out and, as mentioned above, is also capable of HD - there is no Freesat PVR with a lesser specification.

Freesat is not quite the same as FTA. A Freesat box receives FTA channels but it also receives the special Freesat EPG (Electronic Programme Guide). This means that it has a full 7 day programme guide - an FTA receiver will only have now and next information.

I don't have personal eperience of Spain but I agree that it looks like 1.5m should be big enough for you. Perhaps someone closer to you could confirm. Don't forget that in Spain they measure size vertically so you will need to be careful to check that the horizontal measurement is actually 1.5m when you buy. Also don't forget that you will need two leads from the LNB for a PVR so you will need a quad to be able to supply this.

with you being that far north in spain you may even be able to get very good reception on most of the channels on something like a meter dish!! a little bit more friendlier than a 1.5m dish...maybe one of the 1.25m offsets would do...
and yes some installers in spain are "flexible" with the dish sizes they quote..
i dont know of any installers in your area tho

Sorry sorry sorry PaulR - I meant to say Freesat, not Freeview. My brain is getting a bit befuddled by all this stuff. I have a roof terrace, with 1.5 m wall around. However I might have to mount dish a bit off the floor to ensure line of sight of the satellite (I am assuming that is important). So maybe start with a bit smaller than 1.5m and see how it goes. Don't want to upset the neighbours. Thanks for advice about dimensions.
Would I be best to buy e.g. Humax HD Freesat receiver in UK and take it over? Do I need two leads if PVR is built into the receiver?

I'll let you into a little secret. When I was typing my reply I read it it through before posting and to my horror found that I'd written Freeview instead of Freesat in one place!

As the Humax Freesat receiver is for the UK market you might find it difficult or expensive to buy it elsewhere. There are no technical problems so, if you do find it elsewhere at the right price, go for it.

In order to use the PVR to its maximum (ie being able to record one programme while watching another) you need two feeds from the satellite dish to the two tuners inside the PVR. I believe that it will work after a fashion with just one feed though, it'll just be less flexible to use.

best buy it in the uk if you can be sure that you can get it back incase it goes wrong...

i have seen freesat HDs in spain for sale by companies from 300 to 400 euros! i have seen others at the more reasonable 200 euros...some of them tempt you with the offer of a FREE HDMI cable...which of course come with the kit!!

you can mount the dish on the floor (concret plinth) as long as it is in a position furthest away from the wall...the porblem here is if you want to upgrade the dish as the support for bigger dishes may not be compatiable with the one in the plinth so some "bodging / precision engineering" may be required.
