Just been reading a bit about these freesat cards that are coming in October from Sky for about GBP 20 (just for the card).

Would it be avalible to use it abroad and is it possible to use this card in an "old" sky digital reciever?

Just curious.

It better not be cheaper than my £23.50 Free2View card, as "that's how much it costs Sky to administer the issuing of the card" !!!!!

Where did the £20 GBP price tag come from?? I was not aware that a "card only" option is available when the service is launched, just the £150 GBP "all in package" with the requirement to be connected to phone line for 12months!

"Anyway the scheme, to be called Freesat (no surprise there then), will offer for a one-off payment of £150 a complete installation including a viewing card. For people who already have the equipment, a viewing card will be offered for £20. The system will then 'give' you up to 200 free channels. I put the word 'give' in inverted commas deliberately because most of those 200 channels are FTA and therefore already available to anyone with a digital receiver."

No disrespect to the site, which gives fantastic help for those who need it, I somehow think that the £20 figure is a guess (hope?) of what might happen.

It woundn't surprise me if these card have an expiry date and that the only way to carry on is to buy a $ky sub package.

Will these "200 free channels" be the same as the ones sky customers have already?

Nobody knows if there will be a card-only option, or what channels will be available (AFAIK).

However it is incredibly unlikely that there will be channels available on Sky’s FreeSat system that are not available with any Sky subscription, to the point of that being certain.

In other words if you have a Sky subscription you will get all the channels available to FreeSat viewers, plus the ones you pay for of course.

Will it mean that for sky customers not in UK, they will be able to get ITV etc?

Certainly ITV1, C4 & C5.

Come the end of the year, ITV 3 will be added to that. We already know its not going onto the lineup as a pay channel.

As for ITV 2 gawd knows - any speculation is little better than a guess at the moment.

Only with the pretence of buying a card and registering it to a UK address, they won’t be officially available outside the UK. Although these cards will be sold with a one off payment, there will still be a contract with them restricting them to (legal) use in the UK.

No doubt they will make their way across Europe at inflated prices, but hopefully nothing like what people are paying at the moment for FTV cards.

£20+vat = £23.50... same as those that were available in jan.
Good point, well made.

I didn't have my VAT-head on that day...

Still think that everyone else should pay a nominal amount more than Free2Viewers!

What about £23.55?

Then I can feel that I got a discount for getting in b4 the deadline...

The discount you got is having been able to view the FTV channels since the beginning of the year. ;)

TWAG, why are you paying £32 a month when you could watch it for £14? Also, if you are past your 12 month contract, you can cancel and you will get all of the FTV channels anyway via the cancelled card.

How and where would I be able to obtain one of these? Would it work in Ireland?

Can't help on how and where but I can confirm that an activated card will work for all the FTV channels in any digibox. Note that if you get a UK registered card then you will get ITV, C4 and Five and that the scrambled Irish channels will not be available.
