My uncle still uses my grandmother's fridge from the 60's at his dacha. Has never skipped a beat. Everything made these days is pure brown tosh.

This one, actually....

That's why I buy cheap brands like Bush, as they seem no more unreliable than Neff, Smeg and all the other posh stuff.

And it doubles as a living fire upon failure!

I thought as much but it hurts my brain to call it thus since it has no fuses :) (all breakers and GCDs)

Unité de consommation (Consumer Unit)

Mind you, that Google Translation is probably too literal and more likely to refer to the size of a portion of Moules.

We've just had 10 years out of a Bosch dishwasher and fridge-freezer, although we had to replace both at around the same time. Customer service is an interesting, experience though... :(

I am very far from being fluent in French but just occasionally the French word for an object comes to front of my brain and pushes to one side the English one I'm struggling to say. I sense your pain.

Wandering slightly off topic, we went to Darty to buy the new fridge freezer and had a Gorenje (manufactured in Slovenia I think) 'retro' one in mind. We enquired about said product and despite it costing more than the one we did buy, the manager warned us off it. The ones he had sold all suffered with failing door seals apparently.

I've put surge protectors on every fuseboard (is this the word? despite being a native speaker of English I've spent a long time in France and subsequently some of my vocabularly, principally concerning houses and babies, is primarily French :) The tableau éléctrique in any cse). Sensitive equipment (not the fridge! :( ) is further protected by local surge protectors. The tinfoil hat helps as well :)

I think you confuse the old fuse / fuse plate that protects the power lines.
We currently use breakers, fuses triggered by consumption (excess) or short, are resettable.
A photo tiing not.

Fuseboard.jpg

Starting from the right.
Interructor generate differential circuit breakers for each (N + L [Neutral + Line]).

Surge protectors = = parasurtenseurs surge protectors.

Sunscreens that comment, for peaks, are these (for general electrical panel of the house).
Surge-Protector-Electrician-Perth-e1343134501183.jpg

Internally have various types, in general, we think that are two electrodes enclosed in a glass ampoule, are adjusted to such skip an electric arc (spark) between the electrodes at 420 volts AC ~, we connected on one side line / phase feeding and the other grounding of the house.
In another downloader the Neutral and on the other side making Earth.

For example, any voltage above 420 ~ VoltiosAC sends to Earth to not damage the installation.
The intensity supported by the downloader, is indicated (many models / intensities).
You also have small protective / unloaders plug (Varistor + X amp fuse [usually thermic also]).
The plug must be grounded (important).
