Trying to fix a mates computer, he managed to get alot of spyware on there, and some of it wont be removed. Particular problem is with IE, and the changing of the start page, that kind of thing. Also some pop ups. Running updated NOD in the background, and done scans with Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Microsoft Anit-Spyware, all have removed stuff, but the problem still remains!? Any suggestions.

I have always found it better to boot to safe mode and then run both AV scan as well as spyware scan. Doing this in safe mode ensures that nothing else is loaded into high memory which is able to re-infect the PC when it is later shut down. ;) It is true though that some AV's will not necessarily run in safe mode.
The fact that the IE home page is being changed indicates a hijack program which will re-infect unless removed.

Hi yazooo,
look for hijack this, if you do a search on google you will find lots of sites. You can get free scans of your computer from:
_http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/?ref=google_hj

In IE there is a pop-up blocker under 'tools'. Needs to be switched on.

If you install a prog like Webroot Spy Sweeper it runs in the background and will warn when an attempt is made to change a home page.

Just to add a small hint, if you have an internet connection that can be removed before scanning, do it before turning on the PC. If your mate has a wireless connection, physically remove the two way transmitter.

It might also be worth checking for dialers
