Amount of System memory has changed
Diskette Drive O seek failure
Strike F1 key to continue
Strike F2 to run set up

I strike F1 and alls OK , but does this mean theres something seriously wrong with the hard drive and I should start backing up everything (meaning trying to locate the zip drive, PSU and that special lead in the shed with the big spiders ) ?

Could just be a one-off boot glitch. Could be more serious. Back up now, and every week for the rest of your life, and then you'll never have to worry again. :)
Has it happened more than once?

The shed indeed...

For every backup device full of spiders, there's a fat disaster recovery executive rubbing his hands.

its trying to say that the amount of ram has changed since the last time started and it is unable to find a the floppy drive its not that serious it just means you have a faulty memory stick in your laptop but it will still work

Thanks , less of a panic then ( I think the spiders have taken the surplus hardware down the boot sale anyway)

I was inclined to think memory or perhaps a loose floppy cable or something. If the floppy plays up or the light stays on then it may be the cause. If the light stays on in the floppy drive permanently and a floppy disc is in it then it can damage the floppy disc.
