Hello everyone,
A first posting from a newby, so please be gentle. I currently have a Sky digital package along with Sky plus. But what I need to know is; can I plumb my 80cm dish into my existing receiver, and pick up un-encrypted free view programmes from Greece. I've been trying to learn to speak greek for a number of years now, and I'm hoping to be able to expose myself (ooh err missus!!) to greek language on a daily basis. in the hope that it'll aid my learning process?
If anyone has experience with satelite set-ups to receive greek tv, I'd be most grateful for your thoughts on this subject.

All the best

The short answer is yes you can do it.

Due to the limited number of symbol rates available with a digibox however, you will only get half a dozen or so channels. You need to point yor 80cm dish at Hellas sat2 which is at 39 deg east. look here.

Happy viewing and :-Welcome1 to the forum

There are a few on Hotbird, check out:

and search the audio column for Gr. You will need to change your dish position though and maybe even buy a cheap FTA receiver (although most seem to be on 27500 3/4).
I remember one channel that was around last year, which came up as unknown on my receiver. Mostly it was a Greek version of BBC Parliament, but in the evenings they had undubbed films with Greek subtitles, which is surprisingly useful in language learning!

Hi,
thanks for that! but can anyone explain to a complete novice what sort of LNB I'll need and how do I go about tuning in my current receiver to the other satelite?

Cheers

Hi,

You need a dish pointing at the Hotbird sat, and a decoder.
BE WARNED: the only Free To Air greek channels are the channels that you don't really want to watch!!! The only channel that you may want to watch is ERT SAT (http://www.ert.gr/tv/en/tvChannels.asp?ch_id=11)...

To get the channels that are "watchable" you need to get a subscription with the Greek equivalent of Sky (www.NOVA.gr).

Your 80cm dish should be fine for hotbird.
