Yup. Came back from France to the UK a week ago. Travelling by car and we took the Channel Tunnel. Anything particular I can possibly help with?

The virus is taken pretty seriously here. Masks are obligatory in shops and restaurants with hand sanitizer at the door, and while I haven't seen anyone checking on shoppers, neither have I seen a customer without a mask. The restaurant we go to every Sunday, which is British owned and run but has a 50/50 mix of UK and French clients, enforces it's health policies quite rigidly. The other week I saw the owner refuse entry to clients who weren't wearing masks. He told us that the French authorities are undertaking secret spot checks and if you aren't complying you can be fined and closed down for a while. It sounds severe but from this side of the Channel it seems much more effective than the UK's indecisive, unclear policies.

Thanks; was just wondering about how realistic it would be to do an overnight to Calais for a spot of shopping

Yes, I realise that rules are strictly enforced in France, and respect that. We have a house in 49 but are more or less resigned that we won't get to visit this year. Just frustrated that our bunch of clowns continue to punish is to compensate for their criminal negligence for the first 3 months of the year.....IMHO!

Coming back to the UK I was expecting to be held up by extra checks but in practice it was just a matter of seconds for the border control to visually confirm that the PDF (sent by email after successfully completing the online form) was in our respective names. No QR scanner here! At least on the channel tunnel, don't know about the ferries.

Part of me thinks that, but part of me is thinking that this farce will be here into next year with all our freedoms f.....d up, 'just following the science.'
Don't know about you, but I don't believe there's any more risk in France despite what we're being told.

Risk can be managed. On a personal basis if you're careful about where you go, how often and what you do there then you can reduce the likelihood of being exposed to the virus.

Problems in hotspots can be avoided in whatever country you're in but the overall figures are what determines whether the country is on the quarantine list or not. Shopping in Carrefour is much the same as shopping in Asda.

Though on the whole, probably dearer...

It definitely depends where you go. If you stay in a very rural area and observe the precautions, I suspect you are at less risk than in the UK. According to our local nurse, during the initial outbreak we had zero cases in the area he covers. I have no reason to suspect it's any different this time round..

My sister has just come back from here rural village near Chartres in the Centre which was up until three years ago, her main residence. She had to go out there to sort some things, but needed to come back after a month or so, so had to put up with the quarantine. She always uses the tunnel.

Agreed, except for wine. Would have liked to get a stock before 'prohibition.'

Straying off topic but we find Lidl always has a good selection at reasonable prices...

We were going to France this year but Flybe folded up and the virus came so we thought is it worth the bother. We stayed put, have large garden so not to bad for us. I pity those in small flats and bedsits.

By car from Nice to Norway, on day 7 of 10 days quarantine, minimal movement (with distancing etc) allowed for food\health. Am complying, protecting others. Taking serious things seriously is a good life strategy. btw, infection situation degrading in Norway, imo things may easily go over the cliff if no implementation of strict rules.

About shops, coming back to Norway is more like going to East Germany (been there).

In Sweden things are a bit different (as most people abroad probably knows by now) and things are getting better day by day. We had no lockdown and almost no one uses mask. The hardest time was during April and May with many elderly getting sick and passing away.

Sadly our annual visit to lovely Norway will have to be cancelled this year. Hopefully things will be better next year even if the virus still will be a part of our lives.

Ten (or was it Eleven?) thousand reported new cases in France (larger country, slightly smaller population IIRC!) - don't go there .
