I thought 1080i was better than 720p goes to show how wrong you can be,

Why is Bufon wearing a pink glove on one hand & yellow glove on the the other o_O

The bitrate might be higher with us but the resolution is lower. So your tv needs to blow up video to full HD. Depending on your tv that will determine the quality of the picture you see (subjective). I personally prefer 1080i to 720p. The picture "feels" a lot better and you cannot see any interpolation (like black hair with grey strands).

^^^ those German HD's are superb looking and detailed here. On my particular setup\tv the 720 high bitrate beats the 1080 lower bitrate. Knowing some languages am spending quite some time on astra 19 FTA's.

Knowing some languages am spending quite some time on astra 19 FTA's.

Certainly helps if you know multiple languages, just not the same when it's in a foreign language.

@4wd: You are right, the bitrates are a lot higher. Nevertheless, especially when watching the news and the man in the studio has greyish/dark hair, it really bugs me when they do only little movements, the pixels start jumping about and creating artifacts because of the need to interpolate the picture to 1080 lines. So its more a subjective thing, in no way based on any technical background. It just feels better to watch e.g. BBC HD compared to the german programmes. It might also have something to do with the kind of tv I have got. The effect seems to be less apparent when watching german HD with my Panasonic HD recorder than when watching via the Samsung tv.

^^^ On my combination of boxes\transmission\tv (Panasonic btw) it's the Astra 19 hd's that somehow seems 'best' subjectively. Started to look into possible causes of why's and how's and discovered those bit differences. In addition to high max rates, looks like the German hd's uses less variation of rates, always stays quite high whatever scene is transmitted. Generally, seems to apply to anything on Astra 19 (see attach.).

Just some interesting tech digging, I could choose any of the above posted channel examples for the football and be happy enough with the quality. And Go! Iceland :O)

Satellite/DTV HD channels with 720 are in progressive mode, which means the picture is already non interlaced that should result in smoother movement. Channels with 1080 are interlaced and it's up to either the receiver or the TV to de-interlace the video content, and as you can imagine some are more successful than others. I personally leave the de-interlacing to my Samsung FHD TV rather than the receiver, by setting the video output of the receiver to 1080i so that the TV takes over with amazing results, provided the bitrate is sufficient as well.
1280x720 is a smaller frame so it also comes to either the receiver's or the TV's scaler to give the optimal results when blowing up the resolution to 1920x1080. So it's a compromise for both situations, and this is where the bitrate plays its role, as well as each channel's mastering. I have seen a few full HD channels producing better overall quality with less bitrate compared to others. Note that most digital channels also use statistical multiplexing which means the bitrate is auto adjusted by the content shown in real time, and this is why average bitrate is a more reliable indication than real time.
