first you need 2 wires a red one and a green one, these are very important.as your set becomes more complex these colour coded wires will be a major part in decoding the channels you want.maybe some of the other people on here can help you further as my electronics knowledge is also a bit limited.

LOL Don't forget the fuse. I think if everyone chips in, you'll be up and running in no time. :-bunny

Those Chinese guys are clever and will build anything you like.

1. Fly out to China
2. Find a factory that makes set top boxes
3. Find a translator
4. Ask them to make a satellite receiver for you
5. Rob a bank or nick some money off your Mum

Find someone to build you an operating system or customise a version of Linux to work with your hardware.

Done

Tell all your student mates taht you built it just so they think you are really clever.

Easy, build your own PC and fit a Technistar DVB-S card and run it on Linux and code your own software that controls all the cards and channels and a nice Vivo.

As I think you will have guessed by the replies that it is not really feasible for you to build your own satellite receiver from scratch. Better use your PC and use a PCI satellite card.

Another option would be, buy an unbranded Sat receiver and pass it off as your own. Or get some fine sandpaper and remove the name yourself. Either way I think you could get away with it. It worked with my dyson. LOL

If you want to build a receiver for analogue satellite TV, it is feasible. A digital receiver is probably going to be a lot more difficult as you would need to write or obtain suitable firmware, which supposes that you have access to some pretty specialised software development tools.

I've built half an analogue satellite demodulator (from LNB input to 480MHz IF output). It is really not difficult to do, if you know enough about radio frequency electronics and can get hold of the bits cheap. Your best starting point is the application notes from semiconductor manufacturers like Philips or Zarlink (formerly Mitel formerly Plessey).

Mind you, it would be cheaper to buy a ready made analogue receiver for 30 euros or so. Even a digital receiver is only about 80 - 100 euros.
