My Satellite Setup
120cm offset dish+manhattan plaza st500,
but would like to upgrade my system to receive freesat UK in the South of Italy.
My Location
TURI (BARI), APULIA, SOUTH ITALY
:confused :confused Hello everybody and thanks in advance for helping me.
I live in a small town 30kms south-east from Bari in the South of Italy, I am equipped with a 125 cm sat dish, with HH STAB 120 but I would like to upgrade my system so to receive Sky Digital FreeSat Channels.
Do I have any chance of getting it??
Do you think a 2.4m IRTE sat dish will work for it? or is better a 3.10m (not mesh)??
Do I have to buy the unsubsieded Sky Digital receiver with viewing card for CH4,CH5 ??
Please help me finding a solution for it, because reading through forums doesn't give me any chance of getting this signal.
All suggestions are welcome!

Thanks a lot,
Vito

Remember there are 4 satellites using 8 different transmission footprints
Anything on the Astra 2A and 2B south beams should be well within the capabilities of fairly small dishes. You only need the big dishes if you want the BBC / ITV and other fta channels on Astra 2D. The 2 Dsignals are exceptionally poor signal strength in southern Italy and you will need something in the range of 3-5m for Astra 2D channels.

Thx but can u explain me why the South of Italy would be penalised by Astra for receiving Astra 2D satellite??It's incredible!
...I am A real amateur of Sat TV especially for UK channels but in Europe 2D is the only one transmitting channels from the Uk; I'm bored of ALL NEWS channels such as BBC WORLD/CNN...I'm interested in entertainment ones!
Does anybody know if in the future Astra would increase the signal strenght for 28.2°, so to be easily receivable from all over Europe with smaller dishes???
I really would but cannot install a PATRIOT 4,5 m on my terrace just for getting those channels with hi-quality and all the day, it is too EXPENSIVE (even if I still don't have found no resellers in Europe for PATRIOT and then still don't know how much would it cost......)and there' s no enough room for it!
Please continue helping me finding a solution....
Are there Patriot distributor in Europe??
Which european firms do produce very big solid dish?? (apart from IRTE which max diam. is 3,10m)

thx
cheers....

Snap's setup: (In Spain) Humax HDR, Prodelin 1.8m dish + Invacom QDF-031 + CM feed, (In UK) CallFlow VDSL + EE 4G, Sky Q, YouView HD, Mac OSX, iOS

UK: Tonbridge, Kent. Spain: Madrid.
You could try ApexSat in Germany, they will ship abroad and speak English. (You have to register to see prices.)
They list Prodelin dishes up to 4.5 metres, which would probably do the job, they are very high quality, providing better gain than other manufacturers' dishes of the same size. I've never installed one that big, however.
I don't think Astra SES have anything against southern Italy, that's just bad luck as the beam just happens to fall off dramatically in your direction.
An improvement in reception of 2D channels in the outer reaches of Europe is pretty unlikely.
I've just looked at where you are on the map, the nearest reports I can find are: someone in NW Greece, 20kms from Albania, who gets some BBC channels on a 2.4m dish, and someone using a Patriot 3.8m south of Rome, somewhere. Just get the biggest dish you can afford and have space for- and some help installing it!

Hi

The reason that Astra 2D is so weak and irratic in southern Europe is that it is on whats called a 'Sidelobe' Realistically the signal souldn't get as far as us but it does because of these sidelobes. I believe it is more than just an accident that they are strongest where Brit Holiday makers & Expats live, a friend in the business told me that sidelobes can be 'tuned' this way.
However, as analoguesat quite rightly says, you can get almost everything else except BBC & ITV with a much smaller dish (around 1.5m should be ample) and a Sky subscription. This seems a sensible compromise in your situation. I (or one of the other posters) will fill you in on how to do it if you are interested.

Cheers

thanks for your suggestion,,,I think (for now) that I will accept the compromise of getting a paid subscription to SKY UK with a smaller dish.
But will I lose lots of SKY channels from 2d?
I intend to subscribe to the general and variety package,,,what channel I won't see?
And what if I activate a freesat card only?
thx for now...
see you soon

Hi,

Look at http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/skyuk.html

You should get channels on the south beams, perhaps on the north, and not at all on 2D. Not sure about eurobird (The 'fixed' etc beams) - perhaps someone nearer the area can advise. :)

If you are desperate for The BBC & ITV channels then it may be worth trying slingbox hosting if you have a fairly fast internet connection. Googling for "slingbox hosting" should throw up some info.

Hi Ryanair,

some information about reception of Astra2d in Southern Italy:

i) (Unconfermed) Calabria: Reception is possible in Cosenza with a 3.5 m dish, as long as the weather is good;
ii) (Confermed) In Corfu, reception is possible with a 2.4 m dish;
iii) (Confermed) In Basilicata, no reception in Potenza with a 3.4 m dish.

Hi there Mr. Coviello!
I'm so happy to hear from someone with my same interests down here in the south of Italy.
As you live not too far from Bari, can you receive astra 2d with your prodelin dish 335??
Can we keep in touch directly by phone or personally so I (seen that you are older than me and for sure you have MORE AND MORE experience than me) can ask you for any advice?
Are you a sat installer by profession?
Thank you so much for any further advice you will be giving me.

Hope to hear from you soon...
;)
Best regards
Vito

PS: how can it be possible that further east in Greece (Corfu), a 240cm is enough against the bigger one used in Potenza without any result?

A stronger side lobe in the transmission footprint.
