I somehow like the look of FS1 better but it won't lock DVB-S2. So I am also interested in opinions for this one...

Interestingly also the video that accompanies the add, does not show the size and look of the unit.

To me it looks like a pager out of the 1980s.

You are right it does look like a pager. No size given or anything to compare it with.
I am told that it does not have an NIT function, but what it does have is an AUTO search function which works in pretty much the same way. You can enable or disable any of the satellites in the list, then when you sweep the dish and it finds a satellite enabled in the list, it will then display the satellite name direct on the LCD soon as you get a lock. This feature works on the data stored in the satellite database menu (which is fully customable) where NIT uses info direct from the satellite (only when the satellite broadcasts such info as not all do).

  • This also looks interesting in that it directs you towards the satelite. No more guessing. I like it.
  • Horizon Nanosat Meter DSM-4S.
and at 149 pounds not too much money to spend.

Isn't that what ever meter is supposed to do.

TBH, this meter doesn't excite me. And worst of all it doesn't even look like it is field configurable, i.e. it needs a PC and files from the manufacturer.

It is not field configurable and as you say all meters sort of tell you when you are near the satellite but the DSM-4S tells you how far you are away from the bird and the direction you have to move the dish to get a lock. I am never too sure with my other meters.

I don't think any meter can do that. A proper meter has real-time spectrum for this. It allows you to recognize the satellite by its fingerprint long before the alignment is good enough to get lock.

You could try a mid range budget meter - either connected inline, or better still on the loop out of the receiver (with its own power supply) to use as a level finder.

A quick scan of ebay brings up this one

Great tip for me Trigger. I´ve been and bought it. Thank you. Looks like it has most everything I wanted. I bit worried about updating on the fly, but good price, so can´t have everything.

I received the 8Dtek unit yesterday. Unfortunately it seems to be faulty. Most dissapointing. I have emailed the seller.

Faulty unit returned to seller. Unfortunately his proposed replacement is also faulty. Cost of the unit refunded except for the postal charges. I am not happy but could have been worse.
I am back on the market for another meter.
