On 78.5 east using a C band polar mount with a teflon insert into the mouth of the LNB the horizontal
transponders shows vertical .Why is that?

The LNB cannot be that selective regarding polarity ...
Such errors are usually because you have fitted the LNB 90 degrees out of rotation alignment...
Slacken or unbolt the lnb...
Turn it through 90 degrees and clamp up again..
All should then be well..

What I dont understand is why you have the teflon dielectric plate fitted when receiving Linear transponders..??
Certainly this could cause such errors..

With regard to the TDP i keep in all the time as the Linear sats,6 of them are between E78.5 to 66 degrees.
The rest of the satellites i track are circular between E64 to W27.5.

..and are you saying only the sat at 78.5 is giving wrong linear polarity ?
Circular is directly dependant on the TDP insertion position relative to the lnb probes wheras The TDP is not and could cause anomalies if left in during linear reception.
Id remove the plate and make sure the lnb is corrctly orientated for linear reception first ...then insert it but only on circular RHCP and LHCP...
The accepted convention being RHCP equating to Vertical on your receiver ...LHCP being Horizontal

The teflon insertion does reduce the linear signal slightly.
The Teflon plate may not have much impact on strong signals, but very weak signals go below the noise thresh-hold.
