Hello,

I had a talk 2 weeks ago with Satellite & Cable TV magazine's publisher Sudeep Malhotra. This was his answer:

"In fact about two years back we had received reports of reception in South India on the western coast in the city of Thiruvanthapuram using a 20 feet dish at an elevation angle of about 10 degrees mounted on top of the roof of a building located on a small hill.....
No reports from there after that.."

Also i ve been recommended to contact Spacelink India. They've got experience in Hotbird reception in India. I'd recommend you to contact them also. http://spacelinkindia.com/

Hope this helps a bit on your research.

I would think in south india it wouldn´t be too much of a problem, as the hotbird fleet are some of the the most powerfull satellites in the sky.

And their coverage doesnt go anywhere near south India! ;) Thats why our op will need a 20 foot dish, with no guarantee of success - and even then wont get the superbeam (European) channels . The satellites will also be very low in the sky (10 degrees or so above the horizon), so if there tall buildings, trees or hills out to his northwest, he can forget it.

Hotbird can be received in South India using a 12 feet dish. Just use a analogue channel "Duna TV" while you search. Thats all!

The interesting point is indeed which frequencies of 13E one can receive with only 12ft ? I suppose you mean solid not mesh. And as usual in out-of-footprint reception fading is more than likely so it would be a sensation if with 12ft only you could receive all Widebeam frequencies of Hotbird 2,3,4 and 6. Hotbird 1 and all Superbeam frequencies of Hotbird 2,3,4 seem to be the weakest in your area.

Yes, I receive wide beam channels from Hotbird. Superbeam channels are not available to me. May be I require 20 feet dish to receive them. I use mesh dish. I am able to receive Dream TV from Agila2. It's footprint is far way to me than that of hotbird. So there is no special in receiving Hotbird in 12FT.

Can you please write a little more about your equipment, specially LNB ,Feedhorn and Receiver.I am constructing a 6 meter solid dish in Hikkaduwa Sri Lanka.Arabsat at 26° KU is not a problem - Hotbird is more difficult to get and until now I had no success - but the whole construction is still not ready,I have to get a platform that I can adjust the LNB in an easier way.
Regarding Agila and Dream TV - I got some news that they change their packages on the 1.10. and soon it should be possible to receive it in India (maybe they use a more powerful transponder or wider beam).
You really receive from Agila 2 :-smallmam146° the KU Band with Dream TV on the Philippines Beam???

Not special in my equipments. A universal lnb named "STRONG"(I got it from middle-east). SASA AF-8100E Receiver and a 12 feet "APOLLO" dish. Don't think that I got it very easily. I had failed 2 times. But third time, I got success.

First of All, I need to know is,
do you get any c-Band channels from Agila 2?
Not all times. In morning time, I get 3 transponders. But in night time, the signal goes very very down and I get only 1 transpoder ie. 12541 H / 25600. But its signal in night times is 10% only, sometimes nil. So its very difficult to get this sat in Sri Lanka. But all this Dream TV game is for 3 months only. After 31st December, they change encryption. So Dream TV will become a Dream for us.

This is not necessary amxson. Getting Hotbird depends on your luck. If there are trees in front of your face of dish, you should forget about Hotbird. In my location, only 2 people are able to get Hotbird. That also depends your location. The ideal place to serach Hotbird is a like a Cricket ground. As I reside in the coastal area, my location is like a ground. So Iam getting Hotbird.

Hi !
I am from Spacelink in india and we have now got fair bit of an experience in getting Hotbird in India .In the southern part we have recently set-up a 16 feet dish antenna ( professional grade ) and have got signals from Astro ( Measat ) and also signals from Hotbird ( albeit with certain amount of difficulty in tracking - cos as the size for antenna goes higher the beamwidth is so narrow that you have to be extremely patient - slow in tracking the dish) . There are a large number of transponders available in Coimbatore ( which falls mid way between the eastern and western coast of south india . In delhi offcourse we are better off and have virtually 400 nos. of channels from hotbird at our disposal most of them are from the wide beam and some from the europe beam on hb6. In the 8 feet and 12 feet we are in the course of developing a special dish antenna model with a higher gain especially for such fringe out of footprint downlinks.
in fact in the western part of india ( kutch in Gujarat ) we have reports of people receiving Nilesat as well on our 8 feet dish antenna.
thats it........guys .....happy hunting ..........
