I read that I need a 180cm dish, and I want to buy a dish that is taller than it is round. What should I ask for in the shop?

Elliptical dish?

The LNB should match the dish or you will pick up signal from what's behind.

Thanks for that, Gameboy, point noted.

I started off my satellite hobby by just taking a package offered locally, Turkey, without understanding much about it, and noticed that my two dishes were elliptical with offset LNBs. I recently read about dishes on this forum, here:
http://www.satellites.co.uk/php-bin/forum/showthread.php?t=10628
which in summary says that such a dish can focus signals from more than one satellite to a single LNB. (Assuming it's designed properly!) Before I go down this route for my next dish I'm going to play with what I already have to see if it's worthwhile.

That aside, I'm still interested to know the answer to my original question.

The 'proper' measurement is horizontally on the widest part of the reflector.

Some dealers, the less scrupulous ones give measurements other than this to make it look like a better deal.

Cheers, Lancelot - that's just what I wanted to know. I think I'll nip up on to the roof and see what size I've REALLY got.
