Richard,

You could use the "AnyVan" website to get a quote for the transport. All you would need to do would be create an account online and create a listing asking for quotes for the transportation job. There is no charge for account creation. You will get quotes from shippers who travel on the route and they compete with each other to secure the job.

At a guess, you would hope to get the shipping done for around £60, possibly less if a shipper is trying to fill up their van and they are travelling along a route that takes them near to you. Several members on this site have used "AnyVan", myself included.

Thanks, that sounds like a really good idea. I'm going to bookmark that site :)

Analogue transmissions ceased back in 2012 :( so you can discount those totally.

You dont need a pci card for feed chasing - you can find some on a normal satellite receiver. However if you are hoping to find big sporting events then you are probably going to be out of luck - many locations have fibre connections to the host broadcaster. There are a few around but nowhere near as many as there used to be. Also uk news feeds are increasingly using Ka band rather than the more usual Ku band.

I'm not really bothered about sport tbh. The main things i'm hoping to use it for are free English speaking channels, to take a look at foreign broadcasts and to have a nosy at feeds supplied to UK broadcasters etc.

Just noticed that there is a New to satellite section, would this thread be better placed in there?

If you intend to use AnyVan for the eBay listing that I linked to it might be a good idea to contact the eBay seller to ask them how soon after the auction has ended that the goods need to be collected?

Be aware that there arent a huge number of fta English language channels - entertainment channels tend to be encrypted. There are a few English language news channels or services with English news segments scattered around which give an alternative outlook on world events. There are dozens of news channels available and you can normally work out what the story is fairly easily.

And there are hundreds of fta other language channels on air - many low carrying budget drivel like the Italian tarot shows but there are interesting insights into other cultures. Im rather partial to the shows on the far easter satellites which carry stuff from the former Soviet countries.

You can find feeds on different satellites. Once you get to know how it works, you will find them easily, as they normally use more or less the same frequency ranges for each satellite. To know which satellites you can receive in your region and what the required dish size is, you can consult the footprints of the satellites. Head over to LyngSat and play with this site. They offer footprints for most satellites.

The best tool for finding feeds is a spectrum analyser. This is implemented quite cheaply by the CrazyScan compatible cards and USB devices.

However, most feeds are used for uncommented B-class sports events or news feeds. It is INTERESTING to see but not something I would watch from start to end. Top-Class events are broadcast in encrypted form. Most satellite modulators and professional receivers (IRD) will support BISS encryption. This only requires to input a 16 digit key on both ends, but is enough for people like us to not be able to decode the stream.

As you may getting the hint, this is a hobby like any other: the more you get involved, the more money you spend to achieve more.

In this case:

- Professional satellite field meter to fine tune the dish and to detect uncommon transmissions (=feeds)
- Bigger dish: the bigger, the more exotic satellites you can receive. Big goes from 1m Offset to 8m Prime Focus. Yes, some people on this forum use dishes that big!
- Ku band is the norm, but there is C band and Ka band, also. Interesting stuff is happening in the Ka band, but one single Ka band LNB can cost 1000 Euro and more and only covers part of the Ka band (you will need several different Ka band LNB's to cover the whole Ka band)
- Professional receivers (IRD): they come in a 19" rack format and support less common modulations and encoding
- Two axis motor for prime focus dish: get the maximum reception by rotating the dish while simultaneously fine tuning the elevation
- Motorized feed: allows automatic exchange of LNB (C, Ku, Ka) and/or rotation of LNB for correct polarisation
- ...

So, while you can start your hobby with little money, it can grow almost endlessly!

Do your reading in this forum and other forums. It is an intersting field, for sure.

Regards,
Vitor

I´m new here, but saw the post. Could not help but to ask the question, is that why your name is in red?

Yes 'AS', this is one of my big interests when scanning other satellites.......incredible the differences, standards and living conditions between people and their countries.

Good luck 'RichardCoulter' :Y

Not all satellite installers do motorised systems. If you can't do it yourself, source and specialised foreign language satellite installer that has experience of motorised dish systems.

I have an 80cm for general purpose use, also in Yorkshire. That'll get you a hell of a lot.

Some weaker Satellites and many feeds, will require something rather larger.

im also in Yorkshire (Sheffield) & with a 1.1 meter Triax i can get from 68.5°E to 45°W i can get into the 60s on the west but its mainly data & the odd feed. can get Nilesat & Badr 4 unless it rains heavy & also the african channels on 68.5°E id go for a 1.1 meter if you can as you'l get alot 5800 odd free to air channels, obviously some are repeated on different satellites tho. i have a Mut@nt 51HD which does multistream, DVBS-2X & 4K which gives more channels like the french, italian, spanish & bulgarian ones. always something to watch with motorised, cant recommend it enough
