How much worse is prime focus?

How much of the dish do you lose with a prime focus dish? Im getting quoted 1800 euro on a 2.4 offset dish but I see online I can get a prime focus 2.4 for less than 800 euro.

Is it easy to say what the equivilent offset dish is of a 2.4 prime focus?

Its difficult to make a comparison based on the diameter only. You need to know the actual surface area of the reflector to be able to begin to calculate the gain. Other factors like efficiency and surface accuracy then come into play.

Look at the quoted gain figure when you do your comparisons and then ask if anyone has any comments about a particular dish type before you buy it. Sometimes the claimed gain and efficiency is not accurate.

If an Offset and a Prime Focus have the same quoted gain figure you will find that the Offset should be slightly better on receive due to lower ground noise etc.
