i have read on another site that there are keys you can enter so you can recieve channels without subscription. is this true?

Yes, but possibly not with that receiver as I don't think it is flashable, you would need a CAM like a Dragon.

Sell that receiver and buy one that is flashable... otherwise the cam is the only option available to you

wot cam will i need to get?
it comes with Aston Cam and 2 gold wafer cards.

are they any good?

Not really of too much use these days, for card programming, you also need some sort of programmer, for some CAMs also.
