In Egypt the biggest dish allowed by law is 2.4 meters. By reading signal strength reports on this web site, I have come to the conclusion that I should be able to get a load more channels if I has a slightly bigger dish. (Channel 4, Sky 2 etc) So, I have a cunning plan and here it is.
On a few roof tops around Cairo amongst the hundreds of thousands of dishes there are a few like this. (see photos) I think the smaller dish there is 120-cm so I figure the big mesh one would be about 4 meters(maybe) The mesh is damaged but the frame looks fine, I was thinking to try and get my hand on a dish like this and replace the mesh with sheet aluminiun and make a big solid prime focus dish.

Just wondering if anyone can see a flaw in this plan so far?

They will be C Band dishes Robbie, adding aluminium petals to replace the mesh would probably not produce the desired result.

But our big dish guys will probably offer more opinions. :)

You will have to profile the aluminium very accurately for it to be of any use. Not worth the trouble in my opinion unless you have panel shaping skills and lots of time on your hands.

Hi RobbieWright

I've tried it with similar Paraclipse 4M dish in Amman - Jordan and just as Rolfw said, it did not work. My 1.8M Jonsa's reception was far more better.

Good luck

Thought it would be to easy to work! I thought the aluminium panels would fall into shape by them selfs, just like the mesh panels.

Why don't you get a famaval over there (if possible!!) Erect it for a few weeks and then 'accidently' stick petals on it ;););) It's still a sub 2.4m dish... just with a few 'bits' hanging from it. Lets face it, what is the worst they can do? Ask you to take them off!

Cheers

In my experience a 3m mesh is equivalent to a 2m solid. That mesh dish looks like a 3m to me(3.6m maybe) as the smaller dish looks like a 1.4m.
I have worked on a 3m mesh with aluminium modification and painted white(the first time i came across it,it was silver and i was nearly blinded when I stood in front of it) It was sold to someone who had it bolted onto a container(used as a shed) but as i stood on top of the container the dish would start moving about as my movements made it bounce. Also the supports are designed for a light load and has minimal wind resistance as it blows through the mesh, but with the aluminium sheets the dish would "rock" with the slightest puff of wind.

Hehehe This signal from above is it not electrical and magnetic ?

A small toroid(well, small and small) could concentrate the beam by using simple math :)

If U use that U could get a BIG dish without showing it

Even if it would look funny:cool:

I know they won't ask me to take it down, It's an old law left over from before internet but it's just not possible to get anything bigger then a 2.4 apart from old mesh ones.

It's sounding like a lot of work, I didn't think about the wind thing at all or the size of the stand. I would be prepared to put quite a bit of time into it but judging from these posts it sound like a load more then I thought for something that might not work any-how.

It would be costly but I'm certain you could get a famaval shipped. In it's basic format it complys with the law so customs could complain. Have you contacted Famaval in portugal to see if they have a shipping guy in your country?

I had a look at the web site this morning, I will look into it. Customs just freek out over anything satellite, If I got a big dish I must be a spy or at least up to no good. I know an agent who works for the Press Center here, he helps me get my kit in and out of Egypt each time. I might ask him what customs will do if I import a dish.

What you meant by that ? Did you think what I think what you thinking ? Get a beam from the second dish on the first one ? If yes, can you please elaborate how I can do that ?

Thanks in advance.

What are you thinking what you think he is thinking?
I think he thinks something like ,for example,if you had four 1m dishes connected in a certain way,you could get a signal equivalent to a 4m dish?
Good in theory but not possible,I think.

Good in theory but not possible,I think.

1m dish is 0.78m2 x 4 = 3.14 m2
Single 1.8m dish is 2.54 m2
single 2.4m dish is 4.52 m2

But I think is a worth a shot, to somehow get a beam from the same satellite from other three 1m (for example) to one 1m dish, and you'll get equivalent of one single 2.0 m dish. Just how to do that? How to reflect a beam on every separately dish to one dish ?

This is been discussed before - if I remember correctly the general consensus was that while it may be theoretically possible it is far beyond the reach of the enthusiast and there may not even be the equipment available - anywhere - to do this for Ku band reception. :)

Correct! As previously advised on this forum last year I took such a concept up with 2 LNB manufactuers, including with Invacom, and that was their conclusion (and they ought to know). Having said that it IS possible but mighty expensive, I understand the US military have done it in a few specialised applications (or so my sources advised me),
Pity! It would be nice, here in Cyprus, to have a couple of (say) 2.4m dishes configured that way to give 24/7 reception of all 2A, 2B, 2D channels.
Dream on,

I have meant to transport (reflect) beam before it even enter a LNB !

So how beam reflect from a dish in the LNB, we just need to intercept that before enter the LNB (in focus) and reflect it in the other LNB which already receive that particular beam(satellite).

We would use the same resources but signal will be stronger. But how to reflect a beam, that is the question. I think I need to construct some kind of metal reflector , maybe 2-3 to make it reflect in the nearby LNB.

I hope that is possible, I don't know how long a signal can travel that way, 2-3m, maybe more, maybe less, I don't know.

I'm loving this thread, I'm willing you on Robbie to get away with a FO big dish in the middle of Cairo. This is pure Del Boy and Rodney :p
