Hi members,

I'm a senior level network engineer but a newbie when it comes to setellite systems (I hardly know the spellings man! :-P). I recently bought a Dreambox 500S and I have nothing else with me, the thing is I don't even know what I need to make it work. Well, I know I need a dish and a couple LNBs but the size and some techincal details are unknown to me.

The reason why I decided to do it myself is all the Dreambox installers in my area are asking not less than 500Euros to come and install it and looking at it and knowing it is yet another Linux box, I am wondering if I could do it myself. I managed to fire up the box, assign the IP and connect to it via http but what now? Looking at the posts I've realized there is a lot of stuff I could do, such as flash a new firmware, load some key files, and download DCC but the fact is, I have no clue what I'm talking about.

Coming to the point; does anyone know if there is a website which I could use to install the complete system including the dish + LNBs myself or do I really have to spend all that money for someone to come n do it for me? I need to know what all these software for DB-500S are for? How to get things going? How to mount the dish? How to mount the LNBs? Which LNBs do I want? How many LNBs do I need? How to make sure the satellite is facing the right direction? How to make the dreambox work for all the free channels? What do I need to purchase to see the encrypted channels? etc etc etc

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thank you guys.

Cheers,

Malik

Welcome to the forum :)

Have you read this:

http://www.satellites.co.uk/satelli...diots-answers-questions-tips-tricks-RTFM.html

This link contains some good end-to-end guides (klona and doom are good):

http://www.satellites.co.uk/satellite/123357-post2.html

I started off with a dish, lnb, cables and a Dreambox - no prior experience of any sat systems. I used the Guide and asked questions here when I got stuck.

Search may help with some questions once you get going.

There is also a guide to setting up a motorised system. If it isn't in the I.G. I'll add a link to it.

It makes more sense when you have all the kit and start to set it up. But reading ahead should help :)
