Hi,

I live in Galway, in the west of Ireland, and I'm looking into getting a free-to-air box to decode whatever I can here. I have a 88cm dish and arm but no LNB - would the one available from Maplin be any good?
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=47169&doy=1m12
Also, where can I find what satellites I'm in the footprint of here? I've looked on the forum but not really much going on in Ireland.

It depends on what you want to receive. There are quite a few free channels out there but also quite a few scrambled. Most countries (or regions) use different types of encryption so you should keep this in mind as well...

LNB: Get one with a low noise figure (pref. <0.5d:cool:

Keep encryption in mind how? I'm looking at some gear on www.maplin.co.uk, as they have a store in Galway and are reasonably priced. Butterbox - where do I get a list of all those satellite's channels? and by the names, I take it it's 13degrees elevation, pointing west? This is the dish I have (on it is a cantenna for wifi, works SERIOUSLY well)

No it is 13 degrees East of South, you can find all the channels listed on lyngsat.com but click here just for Hotbird 13 degrees East.

thank God, my mast doesn't point east! Any idea who manufactures the dish I have, as I'd like to get an LNB, or is it just better to go with one of the packages available? How would one go about aligning the elevation, direction etc?

The dish looks like a Sky zone 2 minidish, if it is, any minidish LNB will do (preferably a skyware for adjustable skew), but it doesn't look like 88cm.

72cm. How would I attach the LNB, as they seem to have a circular ring holding them on

No, if you buy a Skyware or standard Sky LNB, then it will have the rectangular plug fitting, it will need the oversize sleeve for your Zone 2 minidish though, as with this one .

Best to get the whole kit from work (Maplin)?
I'd like to use that dish, are the LNBs for sky compatible?

They are designed for the dish, it is a Sky dish and has no easy way of mounting anything other than an LNB designed for it.

Cool. I take it fabricating a mount is out of the question?

Well I guess that you could, but why spend more than you would by getting one that already fits and won't work as well? Make sure that it has full skew adjustment, so it has to be a Skyware or similar.

oh - these are compatible with, eg. a Fortec Star receiver? Lol, I suppose all an LNB is is a balun, for certain frequencies, and beyond that, it's all down to the receiver?

A bit more to it than that Psychobiker. A receiving antenna (probe), amplifier and oscillator to down-convert the received signal from SHF to UHF that your receiver can tune to (950 - 2150 MHz).
