Is a CAM really necessary to receive coded channels from Hispasat ?

I've got a friend of mine with a Kaon KSF-230, with no CAM's or embedded decription. Still, with a change in firmware he manges to receive and decode all the channels...

So, is a CAM really necessary and what are the advantages in having one ?

I intend to buy a receiver, but I don't know if I should get one with CI or not...

On some receivers you can install new firmware (Patch) so make sure the receiver you buy can be modified to use a patch. I would certainly buy a receiver with CI slot for the extra few bob. Most tecnomate, manhattan, kaon
receivers have patches available so check before you buy. Tecnomate 1500 Ci are very popular.
