Is it OK to paint a satellite dish and if so what type of paint to use?

I've been giving the 1.8 some TLC this week, all the brackets and steelwork has been wire brushed, cleaned and given a good coat of Hammerite so now I'm looking at the dish. It appears to me that it was originally powder coated because it has a very very slight stippled appearance but due to its age quite a few of the stipples have come off and it's very easy to remove more when cleaning the surface.

I've been thinking about re-painting it, not really for asthetics but we have a high salt content in the air here and it will oxidise bare aluminium very quickly, the 1.2 has a couple of patches on it where the reflector has been got by the salt. My idea is to use white smooth finish Hammerite and put it on with a foam roller but I've no experience of painting dishes and don't want to upset anything by doing so so am looking for any comments or suggestions on what is best to use.

Dont suppose anyone knows a source of M7 knurled inserts do they?

A few pics of how things look so far.

I have painted some of my dishes, including 1.8m. Just make sure you have matted paint otherwise prepare for Sun-interference periods. I think that it is possible to paint with any paint and after it dries just use fain sandpaper and water to make surface matted. Steelwork looks great.

Although it is unlikely in this day and age it may be worth checking the ingredients of the paint to ensure there is no lead content as this would affect reception

EDIT the forum owner has changed the title and I agree and would have done the same as would probably most of the moderators

Don't use metallic paint, thats a big no no

I normally give my dishest a good coat with white gloss to protect the dish and then i give it a dusting with white primer to take the shine away.

Works a treat :D

I used brush on car paint on mine (yes, there is brush-on car paint!) - waterproof, cheap and much thicker than even several coats of spray in one go. Works fine, lasts for years and no effect on reception.
