A partial failure would have been a better description - seeing at Beresheet almost certainly made a new small crater and is now scattered over several tens of square metres of the lunar surface. Good luck to them with the next attempt - I was looking forward to the pics from the surface so I was rather sad to see the news pop up.

Yes I had a feed on my FB timline however a mere 22K out after successful orientation manouvres and subsequent to the main engine firing something went wrong and there was a comms failure intitially which seems odd, no doubt the engineers will be working overtime to work out exactly what happened to avoid future incidents. I am sure the conspiracy theorists will be at it already explaining just who it was that shot it down:D

At the time of the LoS, an IMU failure was mentioned on the Youtube live feed. That is at the corner of the dog-leg in this plot where there is a gap. https://www.satellites.co.uk/forums...923-the_end_11-04-19_2280mhz-copy-png.123938/ There was also mention of re-start. More info near the end of this article Beresheet fails in historic lunar landing attempt for SpaceIL – NASASpaceFlight.com Comms returned after that. I guess that the reduced rate of change of Doppler after the failure suggests it stopped slowing down at the previous rate i.e. engine not running. Impact was at ~134m/s vertical.

I've not seen anything from NASA's LRO which they were using to observe engine gas during landing

One of the pre landing bbc reports had a bit of info from the British engibe maker saying this was a high risk manoever and had never been tried before. The engine was to be stopped than lit up again whilst fully hot. Anyone willing to lay money down the engine failed at this point?

So definitely not survivable :(

But plenty for the souvenir hunters when somebody does eventually make it back to the surface to explore

They would need a shovel if the 300mph collision speed is verified.

For posterity, this is the selfie that we saw in the live feed that was sent back just prior to the crash
