Hi all,
I'm interested in reception reports on the Astra 2A and 2B north beams in Central Italy, between Rome and Naples. I have checked out the footprints on the various sites available and I am just inside, or on the border of, where it states a 1.25m dish is required. However I don't trust these footprint reports, official or not. Any answers very welcome!
regards
D.

Firstly welcome to the forum denis1501, always good to see new members. There are a couple of reports in the sticky Astra 2D thread which concern overall reception in the area you mention, but I'm sure that also within a short period of time, one of our members from that area will log on and give you more detailed information.

Hi Denis1501 & Rolfw,
I'm new to this site and am looking fir info too.
Anyway I can at least help Denis1501.

I live just south of Rome (Castelli Romani) and am able to receive Astra 2a North & South beam with a 1.20m dish without problems.
The only channel I can't receiver with the FTV card is ITV1.

What I need to know is what size dish would I need to have to see the Astra 2D satalite as BBC will be moving onto it at the end of May?

You will see that theoretically all of Italy falls outside the footprint of Astra2D. There is no way to work out what size dish you need since you fall so far outside the footprint. And the size of dish needed increases exponentially as you approach the fringe area. At a certain point, no size of dish will do the job.
The only thing you can do is hope that by good fortune some leakage of the signal occurs. As Rolf states, keep your eyes and ears open for reports from other users - or else go to a satellite dealer in your area and try to persuade him to point his largest dish at 28.2e. He can test the signal strength on any transponder even if he doesn't have an actual digibox to decrypt it.

PS: I'm intrigued. You live in Italy but your nick is the name of a Dutch town. Are you Dutch?

Thanks to all of you who have replied, both here and by e-mail. Much obliged.
I have a 1.25m dish and am located in Campoli Appennino, just outside of Sora in the province of Frosinone.
I was worried that I would not get the North beam signals but now I am more confident! I've already given up on Astra 2D, my dish is way too small for that.
Don't want to subscribe and then only get half the channels!
best regards
D.

Thanks for the input 2old4this,
I've found one or two sites that say that you my need a 2m dish, but before forking out quite a bit of money, I just wanted to make sure.
But I''ll take your advice about persuading a local satallite dealer to test first.

The dutch town is were my wife comes from...
Cheers.

Hi,
enschede, meatball here, I,ve tested a 1.8 metre prime focus antenna on astra 2d with no joy, south of rome, a place calle Montatattico, will be going back in may, to try 3.0 metre antenna, but have heard reports that 3.8 metre patriot antenna works 100% quality on astra 2d.

Hi Meatball & denis1501.

Denis1501, you'd best ask Meatball a 3.8 metre patriot antenna, I wouldn't know.

Meatball, I couldn't find Montatattico on a map. How far south of Rome are you?
I live between Frascati and Rome, lets say at the begining of the Castelli's.
As I live in a block of flats it's a bit difficult to put up a 3m dish on my balcony, but I'm becoming increasingly convinced that in Rome you might just get away with a 2m or 2.10m dish to see Astra 2D.

I'll be looking around the web for more info and then I'll see if I can get a satallite dealer to test the signal with a 2m dish.

Anymore info that you can give would be appreciated.

Cheers

Three point how-much? Blimey. Go for it. If it still won't receive ITV you could use it as a ground station for the Beagle Mars mission.

Hi enschede,
I believe Montatattico is part of Casalattico, an area full of Italian people who spent their lives, and made their money, in 'Fish n'Chips' in England and Ireland!
It's not far from where I am in Campoli Appennino (FR).

Now I'm confused again!
With a dish of 3m there should be no problems with the North beam.....Your town is more or less on the 1.25m border on the footprint.
Is it possible that the dish isn't aligned properly??

I spoke to a guy at this shop about a year and a half ago and he was very helpful. He may be able to help.

EUROSAT
via Anagnina 491 - 00040 - Roma (RM)
phone 06 79846859 mobile 339 6150682
fax 06 79846859
e-mail eursat@libero.it

There is also an Irish pub in the centre of Rome near Cavour metro and you can see everything.

This may help.

Hi Mark,
I think I know the Pub.. Is it Finigan's? There are a few Irish pubs around that area. i.e. Druids Rock, Druids, Fiddlers & Marconi's, All owned by the same people except Finigan's.
They all show Sky but do not get ITV1 which means that they cannot get Astra 2D.
But the Eurosat place could be the same place I was thinking of going to, to find out about the Astra 2D satallite.

Is it owned by a guy called Carlo & someone else... who sets up satallites'systems for people working at F.A.O.?

Anyway thanks for the Imput

Yes I spoke to Carlo a while ago. He was very helpful at the time. He did mention the FAO and embassies so he might be able to help. If you go can you let me know what he has to say?

I also checked on the English Yellow Pages and there are some other dealers but I haven't checked them out yet!

In bocca al lupo!

Hi Andy,
I'm gonna have to check on exactly what kind of LNB.
All I know is that it's a low frequency 0.3db one.
Strange ... I live just outside South of Rome and have a
1.20m dish and get C4 all day and night without problems.
Are you using the north beam of sky....(07d4)
heard that there was difficulties getting C4 with with south beam transponder.

Read that BBC will move on the 30 May.... Not official yet. Keeping fingers crossed.

He's a question for any of your lads...
My dad also has FTV here in Rome, but the last couple of days he gets the page
for upgrade card on BBC1 & BBC2, but he can still see C4 & C5.
Can anyone help?
